The 549th Motorized Brigade also known as the, Priština Corps was a military unit apart of the Army of Serbia and Montenegro, consisting of multiple artillery and infantry batallions. The unit was based all over Serbia as a reserve unit and in Belgrade. Mainly commanded by Božidar Delić from 1995-2005.

Wartime

[edit]

The 549th Motorized Brigade was deployed into Kosovo after the Albanian-Kosovar population began to start an Insurgency, demanding an independent Kosovo. The unit was deployed in the Wider Prizren Area, engaging in one of the first clashes with the Kosovo Liberation Army. Known as the Attack on Orahovac, Serb forces were preventing the KLA to gain a foothold in Orahovac, the unit bombarded the city, whilst the Yugoslav Army and police went in to stop the KLA attack. One of the largest clashes the unit ever fought in was the Battle of Paštrik, around 0:400 commander of the unit, Božidar Delić realized a KLA offensive was underway, he ordered his troops to entrench on Mt. Paštrik and ordered Heavy artillery and mortar fire to commence. The KLA called a NATO airstrike on Yugoslav artillery positions, however this did little to stop the heavy artillery fire. Delić would then order a retreat. Soon, the KLA took the outpost but were unable to make further advances. The unit also participated in the Battle of Košare defending the Košare outpost and the counteroffensive on Maja Glava.[1]

Suspected War crimes

[edit]

Several men in close ties with the brigade were found guilty of violence and mass murder, committed in the 549th’s area of responsibility. Including a mass killing and sexual incident, in which some of the members of the 549th participated in. However, Delić and his commander claimed that they didn’t know about any mass killing in the area. None of the commanders or executors of this suspected killing were found guilty.[2]
