History
[edit]The Superbet Group was co-founded in 2008[3] by Serbian entrepreneur Sacha Dragic, and the first betting shop was opened in Oradea, a city in western Romania. Initially, Superbet operated four retail brands exclusive to Romanian markets: Superbet, Go! Bet, BetArena, and Magic Jackpot.[4] The company consolidated down to two retail brands: Superbet and Magic Jackpot, with Superbet as the flagship brand.
In 2016, Superbet launched its online platform in Romania under Superbet.ro, and in 2018, the company released its first mobile native application. During this period Superbet acquired a range of technology companies (back-end technology, native app developers, Trading and AI) in the UK (Betler) and Croatia (Superology and Axilis) with the long-term strategy of developing proprietary technology within the betting & gaming space.[5]
In 2019, Superbet Group raised €175 million in an investment from Blackstone Tactical Opportunities (BTO), part of the Blackstone Group.[6] Following this investment, co-founder, Sacha Dragic became Executive Chairman of the Superbet Group, and Johnny Hartnett (formerly Chief Development Officer at Flutter) joined as CEO.[7]
In 2020, Superbet acquired a 60% stake in Lucky 7.[8] Lucky7 operates several casino and online slot brands in Europe and beyond.
In 2021, the company acquired the Belgian operator Napoleon Sports & Casino.[9] Napoleon owns The Grand Casino of Knokke along with 25 retail stores and an online store.
As of October 2022, the Superbet Group has announced they will be uniting all their tech teams under one company, called Happening. This tech branch of Superbet operates technology hubs in Zagreb, Croatia; Bucharest, Romania; and London, England, focused on developing and enhancing its proprietary technology.
In 2023, Superbet Group has appointed Hans-Holger Albrecht (former CEO of Deezer), as Chairman of the Board.[10]
In 2024, Superbet Group announced that Sacha Dragic (Superbet’s founder) and Jimmy Maymann (a technology investor and former CEO of Huffington Post[11]) will be both serving as Co-CEOs of the company.[12]
