Successor Games LLC is an American publisher of the tabletop role-playing game Planetbound®.[1].
History
[edit]Successor Games (formerly Natural20Productions) was founded by Jeremy M. Jack in 2015, however, Successor Games’ history is much older than the company itself. According to interviews with Jack by tabletop role-playing game pundit Mildra the Gaming Monk[2] the name of the company comes from a lifelong collaboration with Jack’s creative partner, Travis Story. As young men, the creative duo created a graphic novel together entitled, “Trials of the Successor” that they submitted to Dark Horse Comics in the 1990s. The name Successor Games is a throwback to this project, but as explained in interviews the name has taken on additional meaning over time. Jack and Story create projects that they say are “successors” to the creators that inspired them in their youth and that they intend to leave projects in the world that will inspire creative “successors” among the next generation.
According to the company website Successor Games “Makes HARDCORE Games!” The company defines HARDCORE games as consisting of four parts: 1) A compelling premise and setting (which they colloquially call “the fluff”), 2) comprehensive, clear, concise, and consistent rules (“the crunch”), 3) easy to navigate layout and beautiful, consistent illustrations (“the chrome”), and a multitude of character options that encourages role-playing (“the drama”)[3].
Games
[edit]Planetbound®
[edit]Jack created the company’s flagship game, Planetbound®, in 1990 at the age of 14 and had run the game with numerous players for decades. In 2020, on the game’s 30th anniversary, Jack launched a successful Kickstarter of the game entitled "Planetbound™: A Sci-Fi/Fantasy Tabletop Role-Playing Game", after which Story was brought on board to create the rules and mechanics for the game, called the Die-Strength System[4]
Planetbound® Book I was made available on DriveThruRPG[5] in August 2024 in hardcover, softcover, and digital editions along with the Die-Strength System Conspectus for Planetbound®[6], a companion book for the rules and mechanics available in softcover and digital editions.
