The Southern Sunday Football League (SSFL) is one of the league organisations in London. It primarily covers Clapham, Balham, Wandsworth, Tooting, Wimbledon, and Raynes Park. The league possesses FA Charter status.[1]
History
[edit]The Southern Sunday Football League was founded in 1944 by Jim Sips, Cliff Miller, Bert Swift, and Frank Woods, with headquarters at the Bulls Head Pub at Clapham Old Town.[2] In 1960, the league settled at the Old White Horse on Brixton Road.[3] The league's primary cup competition is the Marcus Lipton Cup, in which all teams compete annually. The competition is named after the former MP for Brixton, Marcus Lipton who donated a cup in 1959.[4]
The Southern Sunday Football League has previously received recognition in the form of London Grassroots League of the Year 2019/20.[1]
The League is affectionately covered by the SELK Grassroots Podcast every week alongside other sunday leagues in the region.[5]
Several teams in the league are known for their high quality team wear, with some gaining widespread recognition.[6] Some clubs are affectionately known online for their team names, including Olympique Mayonnaise FC based in Wandsworth, who gained popularity after winning the Icarus Sportswear[7] company's "Most unique team name" competition in 2024.[8]
The current chairman of the league is Graham Rodber, and the league is administered by a committee that is elected at a yearly AGM.[9]
