Sir Syed Express (Urdu: سر سید اکسپریس) is a regular passenger train in Pakistan that runs daily between Rawalpindi Railway Station and Karachi Cantt Railway Station. The train is named after Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, an Indian Muslim reformer, philosopher and educationist in nineteenth century British-India. The train is operated by Pakistan Railways, while the commercial management is leased to RAAS Logistics. It travels 1489 kms each way, travelling both on Karachi-Peshawar Line and Khanewal-Wazirabad Branch Line. Stoppages of the train include Jhelum, Gujrat, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Sangla Hill, Faisalabad, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, Rohri, Hyderabad, Landhi and Drigh Road.

Background

The train was inaugurated on July 03, 2019 by the then prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan. However, the train was halted along with all other express trains on 27th August 2022 during the 2022 Pakistan floods. While all other trains were restored back gradually, Sir Syed Express remained suspended until 1st September 2024[1], when it was restarted under a public-private partnership with M/S RAAS Logistics from Lahore.

Train Rake Composition

The present Train Rake Consists of 16 coaches, with 10 coaches coming from Rawalpindi and 6 coaches joining in at Faisalabad Railway Station. The rake comprises of One Air Conditioned Sleeper Class, Three Business Class, One Air Conditioned Standard Class, a Dining Car and Eight Economy Class Coaches[2]. The train is generally hauled by a 2000 hp GEU-20 or HBU-20 locomotive between Rawalpindi and Faisalabad. With the addition of 6 coaches, a 4500 hp GEU-40 Locomotive takes over the train and leads between Faisalabad and Karachi Cantt. 4 different train crews lead the train from Rawalpindi and Karachi Cantt working on Rawalpindi-Faisalabad, Faisalabad-Khanewal, Khanewal-Rohri and Rohri-Karachi Cantt sections respectively.
