Sarissa is a heavy metal band formed in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1985. Sarissa got their name from the Ancient Greek troop wepon with the same name. The band has stopped being active since the death of original member and bassist, Jim Selalmazisdis, in 2021. They're often regarded as one of the biggest Greek heavy metal bands in history.
Early Years and "1987 Demo"
[edit]Sarissa were formed in early 1985 by Jim Selalmazidis. After F.N.Kanistras (the band's first drummer) joined, the two started looking for a singer. One year later, Jim found George Chatzisimeonidis, who was playing with a band called "The Bats" at the time, and with him joined guitarist Sakis "Lyssa" Kazakis, a friend of George. Lastly, Jim met Chris Mamalitzidis, who would be the second guitarist of the band.
They started rehersing and some months later the historical "1987 Demo" was born. It was released in Cassete form and included nine songs, most of wich were written by Jim and George. It immedately shocked the metal community at the time and scince then, it has sold more than 12.000 copies europe-wide.
A couple of months later, the band travelled to Germany with the goal of signing a contract and nagotiating the oficciall release of the Demo, with the infamous record company, Noise Records. After a long nagotiation proccess, the release was canceled and the band returned to Greece. George Chatzisimeonidis then left the band and one year later travelled in England with Sakis Kazakis, who had also left the band a bit later.
