The Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS) is an Inter-University Research Institution headquartered in Toranomon, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
It consists of four inter-University research institutes: the National Institute of Polar Research, the National Institute of Informatics, the National Institute of Statistical Mathematics, and the National Institute of Genetics, as well as the Data Science Collaborative Infrastructure. It is also responsible for education at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies and provides education for its graduate students.
History
[edit]- 1944 - The Institute of Statistical Mathematics was established as a research institute directly under the Ministry of Education.
- 1949 - The National Institute of Genetics was established as a research institute directly under the Ministry of Education.
- 1973 - The National Institute of Polar Research was established as an inter-university research institute.
- 1984 - The National Institute of Genetics was reorganized into an inter-university research institute.
- 1985 - The Institute of Statistical Mathematics was reorganized into an inter-university research institute.
- 1986 - The National Center for Science Information Systems was established as an inter-university research institute.
- 1989 - Following an amendment to the National School Establishment Act, inter-university research institutes under the Ministry of Education were renamed inter-university research corporations.
- 2000 - The National Institute of Informatics was established (replacing and transforming the National Center for Science Information Systems).
- 2004 - The Research Organization of Information and Systems was established, consisting of four inter-university research institutes.
- 2005 - The Center for Research and Development of New Interdisciplinary Domains was established.
- 2007 - The Database Center for Life Science was established.
- 2009 - The National Institute of Polar Research and the Institute of Statistical Mathematics were relocated to Tachikawa City, Tokyo.
- 2013 - The Data-Centric Science Research Commons initiative was launched.
- 2016 - To support data-driven fundamental research at universities and other institutions, the Data Science Joint Usage/Research Center was established, leading to the evolutionary dissolution of the Center for Research and Development of New Interdisciplinary Domains.
