She made history as the first Indian woman to hoist the Indian flag on the highest peak of the continent of Russia and Europe, [2]Mount Elbrus East (5621 meters) and Mount Elbrus West (5642 meters), within 24 hours. Additionally, she became the first woman from abroad to hoist her country's flag on both Mount Kang Yatze (6250 meters) and Mount Jongo (6240 meters) in Ladakh in a duration of 70 hours.
Early life
[edit]Reena Bhatti[3] was born on June 3, 1988, in Hisar, Haryana, as the daughter of Sh. Balwan Singh. She completed her diploma in Computer Science from Govt Polytechnic and pursued a Master's degree in Computer Science from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology in Hisar.[4]
Career
[edit]After completing her Master's degree, Reena Bhatti started working in the IT sector as a manager in an authorized service centre in Hisar. Her interest in trekking grew during her studies, and after successfully completing the Chadar Trek, she decided to pursue mountaineering as a profession. She underwent Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Courses at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, which helped her hone her mountaineering skills.[5]
Her decision to become a mountaineer was quite unusual. As a child she always dreamt of doing something different, living a life that not every common girl or woman lives. To decide what she wanted to do in her life, she used to go to the mountains and sit in the lap of the nature. The peaceful nature of mountains gave her the time to introspect and it was amidst the high scaling mountains that she got her answer.
Mountaineering
[edit]Reena Bhatti[6] embarked on her mountaineering career in 2016 and over the span of six years, her notable achievements include:
1. Hoisting the Indian flag on Mount Elbrus (5642 meters), the highest mountain in Europe, on Independence Day. This moment occurred at 5:43 am on August 15, 2022, during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
2. Conquering Mount Kong Yatse (6250 meters) and Mount Jojango (6240 meters) in Ladakh within just 70 hours, becoming the first woman from abroad to hoist her country's flag on both peaks.
3. Participating in the "RUN AGAINST DEPRESSION," a relay run aimed at combating depression that spread during the post-COVID-19 period.
4. On May 2024, Reena went from the Everest summit to Lhotse top in a staggering 20.5 hrs. This incredible feat made her the fastest Indian female mountaineer to summit two mountains.
