Bajpai was born and grew up in Taudhakpur, a village in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. He was the brother of the village Pradhan (head) and was the first person in his village to pass his tenth board exams with distinction. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Science from Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal and his Master’s degree from IIIT Hyderabad.[2]
After completing his master's degree, Bajpai joined Synopsys, where he worked in the Hyderabad division before relocating to Mountain View, California in 2013. He has also received an honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the Crown University International Chartered in Business Administration.[3]
In 2015, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi addressed the Indian community in San Jose, California, urging them to give back to their homeland and emphasizing that Indians abroad should be seen as "brain gain" rather than "brain drain".[4] This speech inspired Bajpai, who was among the audience at the event, to work towards his motherland and start social initiative 'SmartGaon' to develop the rural infrastructure of India.[1][2]
In 2017, Bajpai along with his old friend Yogesh Sahu, who was the CEO of a Mumbai-based company, created the Smart Village App SmartGaon App. After this, Bajpai took a month’s leave from his company and came to his village Taudhakpur, and started working on the initiative of making India’s villages smart.[1][3]
In mid-2018, SmartGaon Development Foundation completed its first project in Taudhakpur, empowering Indian farmers with the latest technologies, government schemes, subsidies, village mart tab, expert help, and mental health support through the SmartGaon App and Taudhakpur became the first "SmartGaon" (smart village) of India. The village now features smart facilities, including an efficient waste management system, streetlights, CCTV cameras, over 242 toilets, a Wi-Fi zone, and 20 hours of uninterrupted power supply and connectivity.[3]
In July 2018, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi mentioned Bajpai and his initiative's impact on rural development in his Mann Ki Baat radio address program, applauded his efforts, and recognized him as an example for other abroad Indians.[2] Arun Singh, the National General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (2018) also regarded his project's initiatives to have a positive influence on the rural society of India.[5]
