QC Terme is an Italian company specializing in wellness, known for its thermal baths and spa facilities.
Founded in 1982, it operates a network of establishments based on the tradition of Roman thermal baths and on contemporary wellness practices.
The company consists of 12 thermal centers and 5 wellness hotels, located in various parts of Italy, including Milan, Bormio, and Rome, as well as international sites such as Chamonix (France) and New York City (USA).[1]
QC Terme’s facilities are designed to provide spaces for thermal and hydrotherapy, featuring pools, saunas, steam rooms, and relaxation areas. The architecture and design of each location reflect and complement their surroundings, incorporating natural and sustainable materials. Services include access to thermal circuits and treatments, while providing structured wellness experiences.
History
[edit]Early History
[edit]In 1982, Pericle Quadrio Curzio, father of 6 children and originally from Tirana, purchased and undertook the restoration of a group of historic buildings in Bormio (Lombardy),collectively known as "Bagni Vecchi" and "Bagni Nuovi".
The Bagni Vecchi complex included ancient thermal baths that traced their origins to Roman times, featuring structures such as a sweat cave that had been historically used for therapeutic purposes. These baths were integral to the region’s tradition of hydrotherapy.
The Bagni Nuovi site, located nearby, consisted of early 20th-century Art Nouveau-style buildings, including hotels and reception facilities[2]
Under Saverio and Andrea Quadrio Curzio
[edit]Pericle passed away in 1985 and his sons Saverio and Andrea undertook a project to transform Bormio's thermal baths, with the aim of promoting wellness as an enjoyable experience.
Only the Bagni Vecchi were operating intermittently with six employees, offering aerosol treatments and hydrotherapy. They were fascinating facilities, but in poor condition, and they had to pay a lot of property tax. During those years, even the family construction business was facing some difficulties.[3]
In 1998, the renovation of the Bagni Vecchi began when Saverio observed that many young people, after skiing, liked to visit the sweat cave (80 meters carved into the rock, with water at 40 degrees: a natural Turkish bath) purely for the relaxation it provided. Together with the company, Saverio built an outdoor pool overlooking the entire valley, which quickly became very successful. After adding a hydromassage and pools with green serpentine stone, a younger crowd started to spend more time at the spa, and by 2003, the Bagni Nuovi's spa opened.[2]
Over the years, starting with the Bagni Vecchi and Nuovi in Bormio, the Quadrio Curzio brothers have revitalized the thermal spas, opening one with a view of Mont Blanc in Pré Saint Didier in 2005, followed by a 4-star hotel in 2013.
They established the Milan spa in 2007, another in Palazzo Abegg, Turin in 2011, and in 2014, they launched a spa in Rome at the Sforza Cesarini estate. In partnership with the Percassi family, they also revived the famous San Pellegrino spa.[3]
In 2016, the company achieved a revenue of 58 million euros, with an average annual growth of 20% over the past five years and, in the last three years, two new thermal centers and a resort were opened.[4]Then the company's expansion went beyond Italy. In 2018, the opening of a wellness center in Chamonix (France) was announced. In 2019, the company reached a turnover of 90 million euros and in early 2023, the spa in Governors Island, (New York, USA) was inaugurated, making it the first-ever overseas center.[5]
QC Spa of Wonders
[edit]The name QC Terme was officially adopted in 2007 under the leadership of Saverio (current president) and Andrea (CEO) to honor their family name, Quadrio Curzio.[2]
In 2023, the company underwent a brand revision following a market analysis and a deeper exploration of the core values of the QC philosophy and concept for its guests. Insights gained from this process led the company to redefine its brand in alignment with its expansion strategy, which, after the success in New York, increasingly focuses on markets outside of Italy, including North America, France, the UK, and Switzerland.
QC Spa of Wonders represents a more contemporary and relevant brand identity, with a name supported by an international descriptor that emphasizes the core concept of wonder. The logo synthesizes the dual nature of the brand, balancing the desire for retreat with the longing for enjoyment, as well as the care for both body and mind. This duality is symbolized by a "wonder ray," an arc composed of a harmonious succession of rays, where black and orange intertwine to convey well-being and energy.
Over the years, these elements have helped the company become more closely associated with lifestyle and fashion, appealing to contemporary generations (Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z), whose values, behaviors, and consumption patterns differ from those of the brand’s original clientele.
The rebranding aims to more effectively communicate with QC’s new guests, highlighting current values and moving away from those embedded in the previous brand identity.[6]
Wellness Hotels
[edit]QC Terme Wellness Hotels are accommodation facilities owned by QC Terme. All the five hotels, located in Northern Italy, have a "Wellness" specialization, meaning that wellness treatments are provided to guests. The hotels are:
- Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi, a 5-star resort inaugurated in 1836. In 2001, the management of the Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi was transferred to the QC Terme group, which began a major renovation project, transforming the entire complex into a modern wellness resort.[7]
- Grand Hotel Villa Arzaga, a 5-star golf resort managed by the QC TermeGarda set within a 144 hectares park.[8] The resort features frescoed walls, ancient terracotta floors and structural details, a large inner courtyard with white tables, a salons with sofas and fireplaces typical of noble residences, a bistro area adorned with tapestries, and a frescoed and columned staircase leading to the upper floors, where the 78 rooms and suites alternate between terracotta and marble.[9] Among the room options there are the Affresco suite and the Arzaga room.[10]
- Hotel Bagni Vecchi, a 4-star hotel surrounded by the Stelvio National Park. It was built within the ancient thermal baths complex and inaugurated in 2012.[11]
- Mountain Resort of Monte Bianco, a 4-star hotel near QC Terme MonteBianco and QC Terme Pré Saint Didier.[12]
- Resort Fiumicino, a 5-star hotel operated by QC TermeRoma which offers a total of 72 rooms, including the Caracalla suite.[13] The property is nestled within a centuries-old park.
Spa & Wellness Centers
[edit]QC Terme Bagni Nuovi (Bormio, Valtellina - Lombardy)
[edit]The QC Terme Bagni Nuovi Wellness Center, located in Bormio (Valtellina - Lombardy), has been developed within the historic thermal baths of Bagni Nuovi and inaugurated in 2013.
It offers to visitors 30 wellness experiences, divided into four thematic areas: the Gardens of Venus, which include 7 outdoor thermal pools and two chalet-style saunas; the Caves of Neptune, an underground pathway where hot and cold areas alternate; the Jupiter Baths, and the Hercules Baths, warm areas with panoramic views of the Gardens of Venus and the Stelvio Park.[14]
QC Terme Bagni Vecchi (Bormio, Valtellina - Lombardy)
[edit]The QC Terme Bagni Vecchi Wellness Center, located in Bormio (Valtellina - Lombardy), was developed within the historic thermal baths of Bagni Vecchi and inaugurated in 2011.
The therapeutic properties of Bormio's thermal waters have been known since ancient times and continue to offer exceptional treatments thanks to the springs that flow from the Rhaetian Alps. Nine springs are located at the foot of these mountains, with waters that vary between 38° and 41°, reaching higher temperatures in winter and spring and lower during the summer. All the sources are located near a tectonic fracture of regional importance, the Zebrù fracture, which marks the boundary between the crystalline substrate and the sedimentary rocks. Four of these sources (Cinglaccia, Nibelunghi, Ostrogoti and Pliniana) are located between 1280 and 1340 meters, while the other five (S. Martino, Arciduchessa, Zampillo dei bambini, Cassiodora and S. Carlo) are located between 1370 and 1421 meters. Around the springs there are impressive concretionary deposits, known for their high radioactivity, which gives the waters particular characteristics. Since ancient times, the inhabitants of Bormio have benefited from the properties of these waters. The Romans already recognized the therapeutic benefits of these springs. Pliny the Elder mentions them in the 1st century in his Natural History, while Cassiodorus, at the beginning of the 6th century, recommended the thermal waters of Bormio for their healing properties. In 1612 it was written that these waters are effective in treating sciatica, arthritic pain, gout, and catarrh, as well as being useful for those suffering from apoplexy, tumors, hardening and joint pain. [15]
The thermal facilities of Bormio Terme are fed by the Cinglaccia spring, located near the bed of the Adda river, on the left bank. The waters of this spring are characterized by a uniform chemical composition and high radioactivity, and belong to the group of sulphate-alkaline-earthy mineral radioactive thermal waters. These waters are particularly indicated for treating respiratory diseases (such as rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, tracheitis and bronchitis), rheumatic diseases and uric acid disorders. Furthermore, the waters of Cinglaccia are useful for some skin diseases, such as wounds that tend to acne, eczema and psoriasis. They are also historically known for the treatment of gynecological disorders, such as vaginitis, adnexitis, cervical ulcers, metritis and ovariitis.[15]
At the Bagni Vecchi Thermal Baths, visitors can experience different types of thermal baths: the Medieval Baths, designed for detoxifying treatments with saunas; the Imperial Baths, which offer pools and relaxation zones; and the San Martino Sweat Cave, a natural Turkish bath set in two rock-hewn galleries.[16]
QC Termechamonix (Chamonix, Chamonix Valley - France)
[edit]The QC Termechamonix wellness and spa center is located in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, a French alpine resort. It spans a wellness area of 4,000 square meters. The interiors, with a minimalist and contemporary design, blend with elements of Alpine tradition.
The idea of opening a center abroad emerged from an initiative by the Municipality of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, which launched a bid in 2013 to establish a wellness center aimed at enhancing the town’s year-round tourism offerings. The group won the bid, securing the rights to design, build, and operate the facility under a 28-year concession contract. [17]
This Chamonix wellness center has been recognized in research as an example of cultural tourism development in the Mont Blanc region responding to the need for adaptation to climate change.[18]
The wellness experience offers a series of spaces, such as an indoor garden, a starry Hammam, and a hot tub with view of the nearby lake and the peaks of Chamonix. The center also features a room with antique sleighs, a fireside relaxation room, a salt therapy room, and a Jacuzzi.[19]
QC Terme Dolomiti (Trento, Fassa Valley - Trentino)
[edit]The QC Terme Dolomiti wellness centre, established in 2016, is located in Pozza di Fassa. It extends over an area of approximately 13,000 square meters and it has a covered area of 4,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 400 people.[20]
The water at the Dolomiti Thermal Baths comes from the Alloch spring, located above the town of Pozza di Fassa. This source flows to the surface at a constant temperature of 9.5 °C and it is famous throughout the region for being the only source of sulphurous waters in the whole of Trentino-Alto Adige.
It is classified sulphate calcium magnesium fluoride sulphurous, and flows at 1320 meters of altitude, from the sedimentary rocks of the Monzoni group. It was already known by the Romans (hence the name "Antico Bagno") for its healing properties, because rich in calcium, magnesium, fluoride, low in sodium and high in mineral salts and it is currently used to feed the different treatments of the Spa path.[21]
The center offers heated outdoor pools, Japanese baths, saunas and bio-saunas, waterfalls, massage areas, a salt room, and "forest bathing". All are enhanced with details that pay tribute to Ladin tradition.[22]
QC Termegarda (Garda, Calvagese - Lombardy)
[edit]The QC Termegarda wellness centre, inaugurated in mid-December 2022, is located in Calvagese della Riviera, on Lake Garda, inside Palazzo Arzaga[23]
Palazzo Arzaga is an ancient Renaissance residence dating back to the XV century, a period during which the property belonged to Francesco Roveglio. It remained under the Roveglio's family for almost two centuries, during which the sons had the structure completely rebuilt. In 1813, due to debts, the property was sold to Forti's family, but then it was abandoned for almost 40 years. In 1963 it became the property of baron Lanni della Quara, who transformed it into a hotel and gold field. Currently the family still owns the entire structure, but resides in the Castle of Drugolo. [24]
The wellness experience unfolds in two distinct areas: “La Tenuta” (The Estate),related to an ancient farm, that goes from the steam bath in the “Barn on the Hill” to the “Cellar Room,” passing through the bio-sauna “The Vineyard Porch”; and “La Riva” (The Shore), which celebrates the enchantment of water with pools and captivating rituals inspired by local legends, including the “Bardali Pool” and “The Icehouse Courtyard.”[9]
QC Termemilano (Milan, Porta Romana - Lombardy)
[edit]The QC wellness and spa center located in Milan stretches for more than 3,000 square meters within Spanish city walls , which date back to 500 A.D., and is characterized by a Liberty style.[25]
The wellness experience is directly inspired by the tradition of Roman imperial baths, introduced by emperors Caracalla, Diocletian, and Trajan, who utilized water drawn from underground aquifers and then heated it within the bathhouses, in this case, to a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius, enhancing its therapeutic effects on the body.[26]
The QC Terme Milano features pools, Kneipp treatments, waterfalls, green baths, sweat caves, and relaxation rooms with suspended beds or Himalayan pink salt bricks.
The facility includes a sauna with temperatures ranging from 50°C to 90°C, an old tram repurposed into a bio-sauna and a Turkish bath at 40°C .[27]
QC Termemontebianco (Pallesieux, Montebianco - Aosta Valley)
[edit]QC Termemontebianco is located in Pallesieux, that is part of the municipality of Pré-Saint-Didier, in the province of Aosta. The wellness center was established in 2014 and it covers an area of 1000 square meters.[28]
There are 3 indoor pools and 1 outdoor pool, 5 saunas, 2 Turkish baths and also vascular circuits, treatment cabins and hydrojet showers.
QC NY (New York, Governors Island - USA)
[edit]QC NY, located on Governors Island in the south of Manhattan, is a project developed in synergy with local institutions. It has transformed a former military complex that includes a large park of nearly 4,000 hectares and six Victorian-style buildings. Currently, only one of the main buildings has been renovated, for about 2,400 square meters, along with the surrounding outdoor space with two Infinity Pools. [29][30]
QC Terme New York is known for the Italian materials and designs: fabrics from Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH, Ethimo, and Dedar were selected, while color schemes and tiling were provided by Kronos Ceramiche and Ceramica Sant'Agostino, with lighting designed by Flos and Davide Groppi.[31]
The project was designed by the architectural firm Rogers & Poor and includes three historic buildings that were once army barracks featuring Collegiate Gothic architecture from the early 1900s. Originally used as quarters for officers, the buildings have been meticulously restored. The design of the opulent Italian spa was overseen by the New York architect Robert Henry, who led the restoration and construction efforts over seven years, bringing the Milanese brand's wellness experience to the United States.[32]
The QC Terme NY project was completed in collaboration with Perfect Wellness Group, the official Effe distributor for North America. Effe was responsible for the creation of the two hammams and five saunas in the spa. These Effe hammams are humid heat cabins equipped with advanced technologies that ensure a steam density of 90-100% and temperatures around 40-50°C. Effe contributed to the project by providing both the EPS (expanded polystyrene) structures for the hammams and the technology of the steam generators.[33]
The 2,000 square meters reserved for guests feature a massage lounge with eight treatment cabins, saunas, baths, Turkish steam rooms, alpine saunas, Vichy showers, infrared beds, hydrotherapy jets, foot spas, relaxation areas, therapy rooms and pools with view on the financial District of Manhattan.[32]
QC Terme Pré Saint Didier (Pré Saint Didier, Aosta - Aosta Valley)
[edit]QC Terme Pré Saint Didier is located in Aosta Valley, in a 19th-century building. It was inaugurated in 2005 and spans a total of 10,000 square meters, 3,000 of them which are indoors.[28] It features 7 outdoor pools and 4 indoor pools, as well as 3 Turkish baths, 8 saunas, showers with hydrojets and Kneipp paths.
The thermal journey consists of over 40 practices designed to ensure a deep state of relaxation, relieve muscle tension and renew the skin. The Spa operates year-round thanks to its location. QC Terme Pré Saint Didier is also committed to sustainability, implementing eco-friendly initiatives such as using energy-efficient systems and promoting wellness through natural, organic treatments.
The waters of the Pré-Saint-Didier thermal baths emerge from the source at a constant temperature of 37°C. They are saline, slightly acidic, arsenic-rich, and iron-laden, with moderate radioactivity. The water contains significant levels of arsenic compounds, silicic acid, iron oxide, and calcium carbonate.[34]
QC Termeroma (Rome, Fiumicino - Lazio)
[edit]The QC Termeroma wellness and spa center is situated in the heart of Porto Oasis Natural Park a few steps from Rome.
The QC Termeroma experience offers several areas, such as the Vineyard, the Rose Garden, the Infinity Pool, the Music Pool and finally the Laurel Veranda and the Emotional Shower, which complete the journey. Massages, beauty treatments and packages for both physical and mental well-being are also available. The center offers the option to have a private treatments: guests can reserve their private pools or have access to special rooms and exclusive services.[35]
The wellness experience includes also the presence of the historic garden that covers over 5,000 square meters, with multiple relaxation zones.[36]
QC Terme San Pellegrino (San Pellegrino, Brembana Valley - Lombardy)
[edit]QC Terme San Pellegrino is a wellness hotel established in 2014, located 25km from Bergamo in San Pellegrino Terme. It spans 4,500 square meters.[37]
The wellness center is located inside the Municipal Casino, inaugurated in July 1907. The building, in Art Nouveau style, was designed by architect Romolo Squadrelli and engineer Luigi Mazocchi. [38]
Its facade is decorated with stucco, bas-reliefs and details in glass and wrought iron. The decorations recall the "Joie de Vivre", and feature mythological elements intertwined with themes of nature. Among the figures depicted there are fauns, sileni, telamons, centaurs, nymphs and other mythological characters. The monumental staircase that leads to the upper floor is surrounded by friezes, high reliefs, stuccos, frescoes and stained glass windows.[39]
After serving for about ten years as a casino and later as a venue for shows and events, today the building houses the reception and buffet area of QC Terme, as well as offering guided tours to explore its history.[39]
The wellness program is spread across two distinct buildings, offering over thirty wellness treatments. Key services include panoramic and sensorial pools, waterfalls, saunas, steam baths, solarium garden, the Kneipp path and the Vichy shower. The Vichy shower, also known as an affusion shower or Evian shower, derives its name from the Latin term "affusio", meaning "to pour and spread". The treatment consists of irrigating the body with a flow of water from above, which is accompanied by a massage.[40]
QC Termetorino (Turin, Crocetta - Piedmont)
[edit]QC Termetorino is located in the Crocetta district of Turin. It is housed in a 19th-century building, Palazzo Abegg.[41]
In the garden of the Palazzo Adegg, three heated pools have been set up, offering the opportunity to enjoy a hydro-massage, available in two styles: with water jets or a waterfall. This daytime spa features saunas, hot tubs, Turkish baths, a salt room, an outdoor garden with a swimming pool and a wide selection of specialized therapeutic and relaxing massages, including tailor-made and couples' massages.[42]

Next Openings
[edit]The QC Terme company is planning future projects and they want to change the name from QC Terme to QC Spa of Wonders.[43]
QCterme is planning a wellness center on Viale Certosa, in the former Merloni headquarters, which will differ from its historical location at Piazzale Medaglie d’Oro in Milan. The new project, expected to openin spring 2025, will take the form of a 'campus' and will include a 3,500 square meter spa, a 50-room smart hotel, and an almost 3,000 square meter head office. The spa will feature an 'industrial' style, offering a more cosmopolitan design compared to other Italian models.
The hotel will follow a concept previously tested by QC in San Pellegrino, known as QC Room. This hotel model provides a highly experiential stay with various elements of "entertainment", such as 'frescoed' garages, mini-bars in the rooms with collectible soft drinks and gym equipment in the wardrobes.[44]
Another project involves the construction of a resort on Lake Como, combining a wellness center with a hotel. The work is scheduled to begin in early 2025.
Additionally, the company is restoring the Berzieri Thermal Baths in Salsomaggiore Terme, an Art Deco building that will house a new spa. However, the project faces challenges due to the building's heritage protection status.
QC Terme is also developing a new hub in Milan on Viale Certosa, which will include its headquarters, a wellness center, and a hotel, with a planned opening in early 2025.
An opening is also scheduled between late 2025 and early 2026 in Pontresina (Switzerland), in a castle that will be transformed into a hotel with a spa, as well as in Treviso, where plans include a hotel with a spa located within a park.
In Mandello sul Lario, a day spa will be built to stimulate tourism on the less-frequented side of the lake while another project is planned in Tuscany, in the region between Florence and Fiesole.
Internationally, the company is working on projects in Paris, New York, Switzerland, London, and Florida. It is also considering expanding its New York center and securing new permits for additional facilities.[45][46]
Finances and Marketing
[edit]Since the end of 2017, White Bridge Investments has joined the holding's capital, helping to accelerate QC Terme's international expansion strategy.[2]
Since 2022, Francesco Mandelli has been appointed as director of the finance department at QC Terme spas and wellness hotels.[47]
The head of digital marketing at the company is Fabrizio Di Giorgio, who selected Salesforce during the software selection process to establish a customer management system and track customer behavior, interactions, and purchasing patterns. Specifically, they implemented CRM Analytics for collecting all customer data, alongside Service Cloud, and integrated Tableau for advanced data analysis.[48][49]
In 2022 Pambianco compiled the top ten for hospitality wellness, it shows how QC Terme classified as the leader in terms of revenue. QC Terme remains at the top of the 2022 revenue ranking in the hospitality wellness sector, which includes thermal companies and private hospitality groups with facilities featuring thermal waters and spa centers. The group, outpaces the other Italian companies, being the only one to achieve nine-digit revenue. In 2022, QC Terme reported consolidated revenue of €105.5 million, followed by Terme e Grandi Alberghi Sirmione with €40.4 million. QC Terme with its expansion in the international market, aims to triple its revenue compared to its Italian facilities. This thanks to the spending capacity of the clients of branches located out of Italy.[50]
The last report was recorded in 2023 with a turnover of 147.3 million euros.
