Throughout Ash's journeys, he has caught many pokemon from each region. These pokemon are mostly caught because Ash shares a bond with them, or simply because he saves them from any danger. Ash's pokemon has a tendacy to earn a very unique battle style that fits Ash's term of personality.

At The Lab:
- Pidgeot
Pidgeot is Ash's first capture when he started his journey. This Pidgeot was encountered as a Pidgey, and despite Pikachu being disobedient, was successfully caught by Ash.
- Butterfree
Butterfree was caught as a Caterpie in Viridian Forest. After defeating Team Rocket, Misty started appreciate Caterpie for his actions. The bond between Ash and Caterpie, and as a Metapod, has made him evolve into Butterfree.
- Crobat
Crobat was caught as a Zubat at the entrance of Mount.Moon Cave after saving a scientist from a group of Zubat that were attacking him.
- Wartortle
Wartortle was caught as a Squirtle after the latter decided to join him for saving him from Team Rocket. This particular Squirtle was part of a group called the Squirtle Squad. Throughout Johto, Squirtle left Ash to rejoin the Squirtle Squad. Squirtle has temporary rejoined Ash for the Battle Fronter, and later rejoined the Squirtle Squad again. After so long, Ash has since reunited with Squirtle, and together with both Ivysaur and Charizard, they were able to stop a fire, leading to Squirtle's evolution into Wartortle.
- Raticate
Raticate was a pokemon given to Ash by Gentleman. After the shipwreck, Raticate, among Ash's other pokemon, were separated from their trainer. This event caused Raticate to think Ash has abandoned them, denied by Pikachu. After reuniting with their trainer, Ash decided to make better care of Raticate.
- Kingler
Kingler was caught as a Krabby, when Ash wanted to show Misty and Brock that he's a good trainer for catching more pokemon.
- Magneton
Magneton was caught as a Magnemite at the Power Plant, when it was attracted by Pikachu's electricity. After stopping a group of Grimer and their leader Muk, Magnemite decided to join Ash. In the Johto region, Magnemite evolved into Magneton when its trainer tried protecting him.
- Diglett
Diglett was caught by a construction site, where a construction crew were planning on building the Gaiva Dam. This particular Diglett is one of many who caused trouble for the crew, and the foreman enlisted trainers to help exterminate them. Diglett easily befriended Ash's Eevee in the meantime. Later during the night, it turns out the Diglett and Dugtrio were working together to plant trees, and also remarks that this place is their home. Realizing this, the foreman decided to stop working on the dam. After both the Diglett and the Dugtrio helped deal with Team Rocket, Diglett decided to join Ash.
- Rapidash
Rapidash, as a Ponyta, was a pokemon that originally belonged to Lara Laramie. It was used by Ash in the Big P Pokemon Race when Lara got injured. After winning the race as a Rapidash, Lara decided it would be best for Rapidash to stay with Ash.
- Tauros
Tauros were all caught in the Safari Zone in the Kanto Region. One of the Tauros ended up staying at Professor Cerise's laboratory.
- Jigglypuff
Jigglypuff was caught after helping it restore its voice. Ever since, Jigglypuff decided to join Ash throughout his journey. Jigglypuff stays outside of its pokeball.
- Aerodactyl
Aerodactyl was caught at Grampa Canyon in the Kanto Region after Jigglypuff was able to put it to sleep. This particular Aerodactyl was a pokemon who scared off the other Kantonian Fossil pokemon and kidnapped Ash.
- Togepi
Togepi was an egg Ash has found at Grampa Canyon,which hatched four episodes later. Togepi chose Ash as its trainer, much to Misty's dismay.
- Arbok
Arbok was temporary used in the Academy Entrance Exam, where Ash sent it out to battle an administrator. After dealing with Team Rocket, Ash was given permission to have Arbok stay with him.
- Mr.Mime
Mr.Mime, nicknamed Mimey, was a pokemon Ash caught prior to It's Mr.Mime Time. Mimey got away after a capture chaos between Ash and Stella,which the latter wanted to catch it to inspire another Mr.Mime that worked on her circus. Later on when Mimey came to Delia's door, she thought it was Ash in costume and provided it with food, until Ash himself shows up. Ever since, Delia adopted Mimey, and Ash officially capture it.
- Jynx
Jynx was a pokemon that originally belonged to Santa Claus. When Ash first encountered it, he had the intention of catching it,but failed to do so. After rescuing Santa Claus from Team Rocket, Santa Claus gifted Ash Jynx, for his good actions.
- Fearow
This Fearow was originally a Spearow that Ash encountered when he first started his journey as a trainer. Ash originally intended to catch Spearow, but failed as Spearow called out its flock to attack Ash. Eventually prior to returning to Pallet Town much later, that specific Spearow had already evolved into Fearow, and attacks a flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto. With the help of his newly evolved Pidgeot, Ash was able to catch Fearow, saving the Pidgey and Pidgeotto in the process.
- Nidoking
Nidoking was originally a wild pokemon that resides on Pinkan Island, where pokemon are pink in color when eating Pinkan Berries. This Nidoking, pink in color, attacked Team Rocket when they were trying to capture a pink Nidoran couple. Ash successfully captured Nidoking, thanks to Jigglypuff putting it to sleep.
- Kabutops
Kabutops was caught as a Kabuto on Fukuhara Island. On the island, Ash and friends learns about the excavation of Kabuto and the veracity about the claims about Kabuto's oil as a considered youth elixir and health medicine, in which they asks if they can help. Later on, Team Rocket tried capturing all the Kubuto from the island in a net, which was stopped by Ash. The island suddenly begun to flood as the fossil pokemon become more disturbed. Ash came up with the idea of making a raft. Later on, The Kabuto swims towards in search for a new home, except one who decided to join Ash.
- Snorlax
Snorlax was caught on Grapefruit Islands, where it was eating all the Grapefruits on the island. Ash managed to catch it after being successfully put to sleep by Jigglypuff in Snack Attack.
- Scyther
Scyther was caught by Ash on Murcott Island, after resolving its conflict with the horde of Scyther it once led. Ash encountered the Scyther while it was injured, and brought it to a nearby pokemon center.
- Ivysaur
Ivysaur was caught as a Bulbasaur in Trovipolis City, were it was abandoned by the mayor of the city during his childhood when it wouldn't evolve. Since then, the Bulbasaur grew in size in the sewers. Ash eventually found it and encouraged Bulbasaur to join him. Ever since, Bulbasaur became a vital member of Ash's team. Prior to the Battle Frontier, Bulbasaur has evolved into Ivysaur.
- Feraligatr
Feraligatr was caught as a Totodile in New Bark Town in the Johto Region. This particular Totodile was a first partner pokemon under Professor Elm's care, before it was kidnapped by Team Rocket. After saving Totodile and bringing it back to Professor Elm, the latter decided it would be best for Totodile to be with Ash instead.
- Granbull
Granbull, as a Snubbull, was a pokemon that originally belongs to Madame Muchmoney at Palm Hills. This particular Snubbull wears pinkish red ribbons near the ears. Ash encountered Snubbull after it was found in one of the movie stars's houses, in which Snubbull seemed upset to be back with her master. While Ash and Misty are convinced that Madame Muchmoney takes perfect care of Snubbull, Brock remains suspicious. Upon hearing that Snubbull won't eat anything, Brock pulls out some rice balls, which Snubbull happily eats. Ash and Misty then realized that Snubbull did not want to live a luxury life anymore. Hearing the story, they came to the conclusion that Snubbull was actually running away to escape the wedding and the pampering. Later on while attempting to tell Madame Muchmoney about what Snubbull wants, Team Rocket kidnaps the pokemon. Later after hearing Meowth, Ash finds Team Rocket and saves Snubbull. In the end, Snubbull has made her decision to join Ash.
- Meganium
Meganium was caught as a Chikorita while on the way to Violet City. After saving her from Team Rocket and back to the pokemon center, Chikorita followed Ash, wanting to join him.
- Ledian
Ledian was a pokemon that originally belonged to Benji. This Ledian, alongside Benji's father's, worked with their trainers in the Mountain Patrol. Benji gave Ledian to Ash, so he could help it become more well-trained.
- Vileplume
Vileplume was caught as an Oddish in the Johto Region. This Oddish came from a group of Hoppip raised by a woman, where it pretended to be one itself. It was rescued by Ash, but then helped to find the Hoppip that were missing. Wanting to save the Hoppip once again from Team Rocket, Oddish decided to battle alongside Ash to defeat them. Soon after, Oddish decided to join Ash.
- Typhlosion
Typhlosion was caught as a Cyndaquil while on the way to Azalea Town. Ash was interested in catching a Cyndaquil after overhearing from a trainer named Koji. Later on, Ash spotted Cyndaquil popping out of a cave. However, Koji arrived and intervened, cornering Cyndaquil with his Sandslash. However, Ash grabs Cyndaquil to protect it. Team Rocket then arrived to capture the pokemon, but the latter uses Flamethrower at their mecha, freeing Pikachu. Ash then throws a pokeball at Cyndaquil so it wouldn't get hurt by the explosion. As Ash sends Cyndaquil back out of its pokeball. Koji reunited with Ash and prepared to attack Cyndaquil with his Sandslash, but Ash intervened, explaining he has already caught the pokemon.
- Slowbro
Slowbro was caught as a Slowpoke at the Slowpoke Well, near Azalea Town. This particular Slowpoke was one of the many Slowpoke who, according to the residents of Azalea Town, were considered sacred due to a legend that claims that Slowpoke's yawning can summon rain. Ash accidentally has stepped on a Slowpoke's tail, which the pokemon gave a delayed response to the pain. A man in a Slowpoke costume approach Ash and his friends to put on some Slowpoke costumes themselves and sit still, after witnessing the townspeople were angry after Ash stepped on Slowpoke's tail, in which they gave up eventually. The man is then asked why he was wearing a costume, to which he explains it is to avoid scaring the Slowpoke away. Later on at the Slowpoke Well, Team Rocket captures all the Slowpoke. Ash tries to stop them, when unexpectedly, one Slowpoke lets out a large cry, and the remaining Slowpoke stands up, beginning to walk out of the cave. One by one, they yawn, which caused storm clouds to gather and starts to rain. Ash then used Pikachu at Team Rocket, freeing all the pokemon they captured. One of the Slowpoke decided to join Ash.
- Houndoom
Houndoom was caught as a Houndour. This particular Houndour was the leader of its pack, and was sick, resulting in it using its pack to steal food in order to aid it. Eventually, Ash was able to befriend the Houndour and helped it by taking it to a pokemon center. After Team Rocket shown up, Houndour arrived in time to help Ash and his friends. Because of this, Houndour has decided to join Ash and leave its pack.
- Beedrill
Beedrill was caught in the Bug-Catching Competition in the Johto Region, and this particular pokemon gave Ash the win. Ash was about to give Beedrill to Casey, but the latter decided to stay with Ash instead.
- Seaking
Seaking was caught in the Seaking Catching Competition in the Johto Region. Because Seaking was too attached to Ash, it has been declared that said pokemon stays with him.
- Honchkrow
Honchkrow was caught as a Murkrow on the way to Olivine City. This particular Murkrow was part of a trio of said pokemon, who caused trouble and stole Ash's Johto badges. Later on, they were captured by Team Rocket, but Ash managed to rescue them. They then joined forces with Ash against Team Rocket and he eventually gets his badges back from them. One of the Murkrow decided to join Ash.
- Mamoswine
Mamoswine was caught as a Swinub at Rocky Mountain in the Johto Region. This Swinub was part of a trio of Swinub raised by Peggy and her father Rory. Later on, the Swinub decided to help defeat Team Rocket. After they blasted off, Ash compliments Swinub for their effort when suddenly, they sniffed a certain area on the ground, revealing the hot spring. Swinub decided to join Ash.
- Electrode
Electrode was caught inside of an electric company's power station at the Johto Region, who served as a security guard there. Ash told Chikorita to use Vine Whip on it to make it explode, creating a path for Ash to escape. In the meantime, Ash used a pokeball on Electrode to catch it.
- Rhyperior
Rhyperior was caught as a Rhydon in the Johto Region. This specific Rhydon was unique for its strength and its ability to know Surf. Ash was able to catch Rhydon after rescuing it from Team Rocket. This Rhydon isn't afraid of the water, thus why it knows Surf. Later on in the Sinnoh Region, Rhydon suddenly evolved into Rhyperior in the middle of a battle, after finding a Protector in the field. However after its evolution, Rhyperior became confused and was shocked when Ash ordered it to finish the battle. This event caused Rhyperior to lose control of itself and not understanding its trainer. It was eventually stopped and calmed down by Scizor.
- Miltank
Miltank was caught at a Pokemon Oasis in the Johto Region. This particular Miltank was the head of security for the Pokemon Oasis, and took care of Ash's Cyndaquil and Team Rocket's Meowth. However, it did not trust humans. Miltank accepted Ash as its trainer after helping rescuing it from Team Rocket.
- Mantine
Mantine was caught at Red Rock Isle in the Johto Region. Underwater, Mantine approaches and scared off Luka's Magikarp. Ash and Eevee swam ahead to distract Mantine, which seemed to work when they jumped on its back. As Mantine tried taking down, a Remoraid knocked down Eevee. Eventually, Ash was able to calm down the Mantine after learning the truth, and worked together to get the Silver Wing. Mantine has ever since wanted to join Ash.
- Politoed
Politoed, nicknamed Bean, was originally a pokemon owned by Tammy. This particular Politoed was used along with other pokemon for a cheerleading squad. After hearing how depressed Bean was and practicing its moves, Ash attempted to help cheer it up with Pikachu. Later on, Bean decided to take on Team Rocket's mecha and free all the other pokemon, with the help of Ash. Tammy decided Bean would be better with Ash.
- Gyarados
Gyarados was a shiny pokemon that was on a rampage at the Lake of Rage. It was lured to the surface by Team Rocket members, who captured it in a net. This particular Gyarados was forcibly evolved from a normal colored Makigarp, thus why its color stayed red. It then later went on another rampage after Lance and his Dragonite destroyed the machine. Ash attempted to calm it down, but was caught yet again by Team Rocket's net. After how much Ash tried helping it get free and looked at him, Gyarados challenged Ash to a battle and was ultimately captured by Ash, who promises to take good care of it.
- Unown
Unown was an Unown of the letter G that fell out of the Unown Dimension in the Johto region. Ash then realized the Unown was sick after picking it up and feels that it is hot. With the lack of a pokemon center, Ash and his friends decided to take care of Unown by themselves from its fever. This caused Larvitar to befriend it from that moment. Ash wanted to help Unown to get back home and assures it. With Unown recovered the next day, used its power to show Ash and his friends about Larvitar's memories. Later on after thanking Unown, the pokemon was getting ready to rejoin its friends at the portal, but decided to stay with Ash instead.
- Swellow
Swellow was a Tailow who led a flock of Wild Taillow in Petalburg Woods, stole Max's chocolate bar and challenged Pikachu to a battle. Even though he took countless Thunderbolts from Pikachu, he still kept fighting and he was caught by Ash on Brock's advice to prevent him from getting more hurt. He was then sent out so Brock could help him recover.
- Sceptile
Sceptile was caught as a Treecko in Petalburg Woods after Ash helped it try to save its old tree home and battled Pikachu. He hen struggled to make friends with the other pokemon until he rescued May's Torchic from a Seviper. Later on Treecko went off to train on its own, where it perfected its own variation of Pound.
- Lairon
Lairon was caught as an Aron in the Granite Cave, after many of them rams towards Ash, Brock and James after James accidentally angered them. In the Sinnoh region, Aron admired Paul's Lairon during battle, which resulted in the latter taking it under its wing for training.
- Crawdaunt
Crawdaunt was caught as a Corphish, while Ash and his friends went fishing. Corphish challenged Ash and Pikachu in a battle, which resulted in its capture. However in the next episode, Corphish struggled to make friends with the other pokemon from the group. Corphish later fell ill but was soon recovered the next day, been able to stop Team Rocket.
- Blaziken
Blaziken was caught as an newly evolved Combusken that Ash was meant to take care of from Nurse Joy for a new trainer, but was proven to be difficult. Later on, Combusken was proven to be worthy by Ash's side to defeat Team Rocket. With that, Nurse Joy has decided to give Combusken to Ash.
- Nuzleaf
Nuzleaf was one of the multiple Nuzleaf that were causing trouble to Ash and his friends when they were separated from their pokemon. Later on when Nuzleaf was caught in Team Rocket's nest, Ash decided to save Nuzleaf, understanding the trainer's thought and kindness for it. Ash offered it a place in his team, ultimately accepting it.
- Swalot
Swalot was one of the multiple Gulpin that were eating all of the food in Harbor City, which made Professor Jacuzzi made efforts to stop them. However, one of them grew enlarged as well as Ash's Treecko. Gulpin was successfully caught by Ash.
- Mightyena
Mightyena was a Poochyena that assisted Ash and Professor Birch to find Professor Oak, May and Max. Later on, Poochyena helped the group at defeating Team Rocket. As Poochyena was about to leave, Ash offered it to join him.

Later after Team Rocket's defeat, Clefairy and many others danced around the giant Moon Stone and evolved into Clefable. It has then decided to join Ash.
