Paul Alonso (born 1978 in Lima, Peru) is a journalist, author, and associate professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (referred to as Georgia Tech). Alonso's writings are focused on alternative journalism, culture, and infotainment in Latin America and the United States. His nonfiction books, Satiric TV in the Americas: Critical Metatainment as Negotiated Dissent (2018) and Thirty Years of Entertainment and Politics in Peru (2022), center on the intersection between politics, entertainment, and satire in Latin America.[1][2] He is also the author of three fiction books.
Alonso is the director of Polivision (a bilingual media outlet of Latin American cultures based in Atlanta, Georgia) and the Global Media Festival (an annual film festival focused on sustainability issues).[3] Prior to his work at Georgia Tech, Alonso worked at the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas[4] for over a decade and wrote for the Spanish newspaper El País,[5] among other international publications.
Education
[edit]Alonso attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru for his Bachelors of Arts in the Liberal Arts and Humanities (with a major in Literature and Linguistics), graduating in 2002. He then moved to the University of Texas at Austin for further studies and received a M.A. in Journalism and Latin American Studies in 2007, followed by a Ph.D. in Journalism from the same university in 2012.[3]
