Parag Chhabra is an Indian music composer, music producer, music director, and singer, known for his work in Good Luck Jerry (2022)[1][2], An Action Hero (2022)[3] and Waah Zindagi (2021).[4]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Parag Chhabra was born on September 6, 1989, in Indore, India, to Manmohan Chhabra and Bansi Chhabra. He completed his schooling at St. Paul’s School in Indore. Parag pursued engineering at MIT Pune but was deeply involved in music from a young age. As a child, he participated in various singing reality TV shows and performed extensively in live shows.[5]
His formal training in Hindustani classical music and subsequent enrollment at AR Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory for western music in Chennai further honed his skills. It was during this time that Parag was discovered by Rahman.[6]
Career
[edit]Collaborations with AR Rahman
[edit]Parag worked under A.R. Rahman as a sound producer and programmer, contributing to films such as OK Kanmani, OK Jaanu, Kaatru Veliyidai, Amar Singh Chamkila, Dil Bechara, Tamasha and others.[7][8]
Parag lent his voice to the song 'For You My Love (O Bandeya)[9][10] for the international movie Blinded by the Light (2019) and the Telugu version of "Sachin Sachin"[11], composed by A. R. Rahman, for Sachin: A Billion Dreams (2017).
Parag also produced, supervised and programmed music arrangements for Rahman.[12]
Independent Journey
[edit]Parag began his journey as an independent film music composer in 2018. Since then, he has worked on numerous films, short films, web series, and advertising projects.
Big Breakthrough through Good Luck Jerry
[edit]Parag Chhabra's big breakthrough came with the 2022 film Good Luck Jerry[13], produced by Aanand L. Rai for Colour Yellow Productions.[14] Parag was entrusted with the entire album of the film, which featured music that balanced dry comedy with deep emotional undertones.[15] His work on the soundtrack earned widespread recognition and praise, marking a significant milestone in his career.[16]
Insights on An Action Hero
[edit]For An Action Hero, Parag collaborated again with Anand L. Rai.[17] He crafted a dynamic and urban soundtrack to complement the film’s tone of dark humor. The soundtrack incorporated unconventional instruments like the Bengali dotara, used to evoke a rustic and earthy feel, and the Chinese pipa, which added a unique and exotic texture. These elements, combined with fourteen instrumental layerings, created a rich and innovative soundscape that resonated with the film’s themes.[6]
Advertising Music
[edit]Parag has also made significant contributions to advertising music, working on campaigns for major brands such as Vivo, Capri Loans, and Om-Tex. One of his most notable works is the Vicks World Cup Anthem for the Cricket World Cup 2023. This anthem won a Silver Award in the Music category at the prestigious Clio Awards, competing against some of the best advertisements worldwide.[18]
