Draft:PWM ATCT

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Portland Air Traffic Control Tower (PWM ATCT) is an FAA Air Traffic Control (ATC) facility located on the Portland International Jetport (KPWM) located in Portland, Maine.[1]

Portland ATCT

The primary responsibility of the PWM ATCT is the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of arrival, departure and overflight traffic in and around the airspace surrounding the Portland PWM airport as well as providing radar approach control services for the surrounding area.

General Information

[edit]

The PWM ATCT provides both tower and radar services in what is referred to as an "up/down" facility. The tower cab located (obviously) on the top floor of the structure, provides ATC Services for the PWM Airport while the TRACON in the radar room on the 3rd floor provides Approach Control Services to the surrounding area. Controllers at PWM ATCT work in both spaces, rotating throughout their shifts.

Control Areas

[edit]

Tower Cab

[edit]

The tower cab is pentagon shaped room at the top of the building providing a 360-degree view of the PWM airport. From this vantage point controllers are able to see and direct planes on the airport surface from the Ground Control(GC) position which is permanently combined with the Clearance Delivery (CD) position which issues the ATC clearances and departure information to aircraft prior to takeoff.[2]

Airborne traffic and those about to land or takeoff are under the authority of the Local Control (LC) position.

Both controllers work in unison to maintain a safe and efficient operation.

TRACON

[edit]

Located on the 3rd floor of the building, the TRACON or Radar Room provides terminal radar ATC Services to the following airports:
