Nusa Penidan people are are an Austronesian ethnic group native to Nusa Penida, an island of the east coast of Bali, Indonesia. In the Balinese language, the Nusa Penidan people are known as Nak Nusé, which means "People who live in Island". During the Dutch Colonial era Nusa Penida island is known as Bandieten eiland (Bandit Island), meaning 'Villain Island' with a 91,500 population They are concentrated only on the island of Nusa Penida but because of the small area of the island they also immigrate and Scattered to other Regency in Bali and other Indonesian Province, the Nusa Penidan people speak Nusa Penidan a dialect of the Balinese language.

[edit]Because the Island have been part of the kingdom in Bali especially Klungkung Kingdom for Thousands of years,So the culture and religion in Bali are also Adopted and followed by the Nusa Penidan people the Nusa Penidan people follow and adopt the same religion,culture and culture of Mainland Balinese like Melasti, Ngaben, Galungan, Kuningan Nyepi.
Origins
[edit]There is no written history of where the Nusa Penidan people came from, but some believe that the first people to inhabit this island were the Bali Aga people they are an indigenous tribe who live on the island of Bali and may have lived in the Nusa Penida, after the collapse of the Majapahit empire many people from Java immigrated to Bali and Nusa Penida So that cultural assimilation with the Balinese people occurred, creating a new ethnic group on the island with the influence of Javanese Hinduism and the Javanese language entering the island And there was an assimilation of Javanese and Balinese language and culture, this is proven by several Nusa Penida dialects which are similar to Javanese like the "Kola" word which meaning "I", although most are influenced by the Language and culture of the Bali Aga people.
History
[edit]The people of Nusa Penida have long been able to resist the Balinese kings who organized many other military expeditions. However, in the second half of the 17th century, the island of Nusa Penida was definitely conquered by expeditions of the Gelgel Kingdom of Bali. The last king of Nusa Penida, Dalem Bungkut, died in battle.
Then the Klungkung kingdom, which was the successor to the Gelgel kingdom, controlled the island And making it a tribute island, The people of Nusa Penida had to pay tribute and work for the Klungkung kingdom and send their harvests to Klungkung as tribute, the people of Nusa Penida also played a role in many wars with the Klungkung kingdom. In the wars in Bali, they were recruited by the Klungkung kingdom as mercenaries. Because of the geographical condition of the Nusa Penida archipelago is barren and the dry season is relatively long. Added to this is the stereotype that Nusa Penida was the center of black magic at that time so it was suitable as a penal colony A Dutch map made in 1900 referred to Nusa Penida as a 'Bandieten eiland (Bandit Island)' which meaning "Villain Island" because The island was seen as a potential exile area, namely the disposal of problematic people from Klungkung, Gianyar and Bangli (Sedimen, 1984). The Nusa Penida Islands are considered to have advantages Because far from mainland Bali, the sea currents are strong and have high waves, making it difficult for the prisoners to escape.
