Nikolaï Clavier (born December 8, 1989) is a Norwegian film and television composer based in the Netherlands. He has received several awards for his film scores, including the Buma Music in Motion New Talent Award, and nominations at Shortcutz Amsterdam, Buma Music in Motion and Keep an Eye Film Score Award.[1] Some of his most known film scores are Wij Zijn Beesten (2023), Berenklauw (2022), Waarom Bleef je Niet voor Mij? (2020) and Gevangen in een Tekening (2023).[2]
Biography
[edit]Clavier graduated with a Master in Film Scoring from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2020.[3] His career started as a performing musician with a Bachelor degree in viola from Barratt Due Institute of Music with Soon Mi Chung and a Master of Music from Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts where he studied with Jenny Spanoghe.[4]
As musician Nikolaï Clavier has performed with international artists such as Aleksander Rybak, Guro Kleven Hagen and Jeanine Jansen and played with orchestras such as Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra (KORK) and Oslo Camerata.[5] He currently performs regularly with Holland Symphony Orchestra[6] and Dordrecht Chamber Orchestra[7].[8]
In 2018 Clavier wrote the research paper Orchestrating Cinematic String Quartets[9] which was awarded the Fontys Artistic Research Award the same year.[10][11] In 2020 he wrote the research paper Extended String Quartet Techniques in Drone-Based Film Scoring. His specific expertise in string quartet composing techniques has led him to give several lectures at Dutch conservatories[12][13] and become a popular string quartet arranger.[14]
Since 2020 Clavier has been working out of Clavier Classics Studios in Utrecht and is actively playing as violist in the Arthema String Quartet.[15]
