Hutmacher had been a gifted wrestler ever since he was young. He began practicing with his high school varsity team when he was only in Sixth grade, and had a combined record of 166-0 in his entire high school wrestling career, pinning his last 73 opponents. During his high school football career, Hutmacher played offensive and defensive line, as well as Running back. In addition to being a three-time all-state football player, Hutmacher was also a four-time state champion in wrestling, the first in state history for his weight class, and a two-time state champion in track and field. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2020.[6]

Hutmacher made his first career start against Northwestern and then recorded his first career tackle the next week against North Dakota. In the season-ending win at Iowa, Hutmacher recorded one tackle.
Nash Hutmacher started all 12 games as a junior. As a nose tackle, Hutmacher ranked third in sacks on the team, and earned a honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection, he wore the No. 0 as one of 10 Huskers to earn a single-digit number in a team vote selecting him as one of Nebraska's "toughest" players.
