Narrow Bliss is an American rock band founded in Carl Junction, Missouri. The band was created on December 31, 2022, originally named Blue Spike, by Paul Garrison and Damien Meister. Although the band's songs can only be found on YouTube as of December 2024, the members (Paul Garrison, Damien Meister, Ty Miller, and Mko Redden) continue to make music and start playing live as a real band.
The band uses three music creation softwares: Musescore, GarageBand, and BandLab. GarageBand is the most used of the three, with BandLab in second. The songs "1/26 2", "The Blue", "Autism Crime/On a Run", "Above Ground", and "Screwed Up Lightning" are the only songs made on Bandlab. [1]
Narrow Bliss is inspired by many rock bands, such as Nirvana, Metallica, Green Day, and The Offspring. The band has tried to replicate 90's grunge in songs such as "The Spike" or "1/26." The band has also explored other genres such as alternative rock, indie rock, hard rock, and metal. Damien, the bassist, also makes jazz and electronic songs on his YouTube channel EggyMusic.[2]
History
[edit]Creation and Blue Spike
[edit]On December 31, 2022, Paul Garrison and Damien Meister created Blue Spike, the original name for Narrow Bliss. The name came from a fictional band Paul had created during summer school the same year. “I just needed a story for my RWC class back in seventh grade, so I used Blue Spike’s members cause why not, ya know?” Paul said in an interview with the "voices inside his head." [3]
The band's first song was "Good Time." It was created by Damien on Musescore, remastered in GarageBand by Paul, and uploaded on December 31, 2022. The original video for the song was lost, however, prompting the band to re-upload the song on January 4, 2023.[4] Good Time was followed by Destruction and All of It[5]and Megalovania but Blue Spiked[6], a remix of Megalovania by Toby Fox.These three songs made up the self-titled debut album Blue Spike.
On January 2, the band released Meme Medley (a mix of the songs Megalovania, Sweet Home Alabama, Astronomia/Coffin Dance, Never Gonna Give You Up, Camel by Camel, and All Star) and Under Ground, the source of a lick used in countless others of their songs. These two songs, along with an extended cut version of Under Ground, made up their second album, The One and Only.[7]
After their second album, Damien and Paul both began to suffer from writer's block and did not make any new songs.
1/26
[edit]On January 26, 2023, Damien and Paul were involved in an incident that put the band in hiatus for several months. This incident, which was not revealed by either band member, resulted in their technology being damaged severely and their personalities changing. It also inspired songs such as "1/26" and provided songwriting material.
No new songs were made for the band. It wasn't until June 4 that a new song, "Another Two Eats the Ashes", was released. Following that, when Paul was able to make music again, he released the song "Welcome Back."
Post-1/26 Blue Spike
[edit]On August 28, 2023, the song "The Spike" was uploaded. This was the first song of the album The Spike.
The next three songs Blue Spike made were remastered versions of "Good Time", "Under Ground", and "Destruction and All of It." This would be the third version of Under Ground the band made. The next albums made were The Spike and a spinoff, The Blue.
The Spike contained "The Spike," "1/26," "12/2" (a 2024 remix of 1/26), and "99 Red Balloons, One Blue Spike," a remix of Nena's 99 Luftballons. The Blue, a spinoff of The Spike, featured a similar album cover with a drawing of Damien as the focus and a more light-hearted mood to it. The album contained "1/26 2" and "The Blue". The Spike and The Blue were released on August 28 and October 3, respectively.
Blue Spike's next album was Screwed Up Lightning, which brought both new songs, and a new member to the band. Ty Miller was hired on November 10th, 2023, as the band's drummer. The album had 5 songs, containing one of their most dissonant songs yet: "Autism Crime". The song would start with a simple bass riff, followed by drums and guitars. The song used many tritones, fast drums, and harsh-sounding guitars such as the djent guitar. Screwed Up Lightning also contained "For Whom the Spike Tears" (a remix of For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica), "Screwed Up Lightning", "Freestyling", and "Above Ground" (a sequel to Under Ground).
The band's 6th album, Maroon and Blue, was released on November 17, 2023. It contained "Shoot it Down," "Guilt," "Beat It but Blue Spiked" (a remix of Beat It by Michael Jackson), and "141!". Maroon and Blue also had a special, snowy version for a "Blue Spiked" version of the Christmas song "Carol of the Bells".
Blue Spike's final album, released December 28, 2023, was Back to Blue. It was mainly a joke album, containing "April," "Learn," and "modern music these days:". April is the only one of these to not have any kind of joke behind it. "modern music these days:" featured many slides and bends to make the song sound goofy and whimsical. "Learn," on the other hand, shows the listener why they should have their volume low at all times.
Anes-Thetics (Jan - May 2024)
[edit]On January 19, 2024, the band was renamed to Anes-Thetics. During the few months of the band having this name, only one song was uploaded to the channel: "Run Away".
Run Away was also the only song to have a home demo version. This recording, though, is a running gag for the band members, due to Paul's screaming in the recording.
During this time, the band also made 20 song ideas, ranging from just titles to completed lyrics. None of these have gone public or have been released, though.
Narrow Bliss (June 2024 -)
[edit]On June 14, 2024, the band was finally renamed to Narrow Bliss. Their first song, released on June 19, 2024, was "Shout Loud and Clear." They are currently planning out 3 albums for 2025 and 2026 release dates, though they have not been revealed yet.
