MoonDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) focused on democratizing access to space exploration and research. Established in December 2021, it operates as an open-source community uses blockchain technology to fund space-related initiatives, particularly Moon-related. The organization enables members to propose, vote on, and fund projects using its governance token, MOONEY.[1]

History

[edit]

The DAO used the crowdfunding platform Juicebox to raise 2,612 ETH (Ethereum), valued at approximately $8.3 million at the time.[2] The organization uses its native token, MOONEY, for governance and funding allocation.

Space travel funding

[edit]

In August 2022, MoonDAO funded a seat for Coby Cotton,[3] co-founder of the YouTube channel Dude Perfect, on Blue Origin’s NS-22 suborbital mission.[4]

Dr. Eiman Jahangir, a Vanderbilt University Medical Center physician, was selected as MoonDAO’s second astronaut[5], flying on Blue Origin’s NS-26 suborbital mission in 2024.[6]

Research funding

[edit]

MoonDAO has allocated resources to space-related research, including research on open source lunar timekeeping.[7]

Challenges and criticism

[edit]

MoonDAO faces challenges typical of DAOs and space initiatives, including the complexities of coordinating a global, decentralized community.[8] Critics[who?] have also questioned the practicality of using cryptocurrencies and NFTs for funding ambitious scientific endeavors.[9]
