Maren Machles is an American investigative journalist and podcast producer who specializes in government accountability and social justice reporting. She currently serves as an investigative producer at the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), where she hosts and produces the investigative podcast "Bad Watchdog".[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Machles graduated from the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism.[3]
Career
[edit]Before joining POGO in 2022, Machles worked as an investigative journalist at the Scripps Washington Bureau, where she produced major investigations into the U.S. immigration system, criminal justice reform, tribal justice issues, and gender violence.[1][4] Her work has appeared on multiple national platforms including PBS NewsHour, NPR, USA Today, Twin Cities PBS, and across Scripps local television stations.[2]
Scripps Washington Bureau
[edit]While at Scripps, Machles co-produced "A Broken Trust," an investigation into sexual assault in Indian Country that earned the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Grand Prize Award.[4] She also led an investigation into the Louisville Metro Police Department following Breonna Taylor's death, which received national recognition and a Peabody Award nomination.[5]

[edit]In 2023, Machles began hosting and producing POGO's first investigative podcast series "Bad Watchdog." The six-part series investigates patterns of misconduct at the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General.[1] The podcast examines how the watchdog agency's failure to investigate complaints led to systemic accountability issues within one of the country's largest law enforcement agencies.[2]
