Lessie Branch, a United States Navy Veteran, (born February 2), currently serves as the Special Assistant for Community Engagement [1] at The New York State Department of Veterans’ Services.[2] Appointed in May of 2023, she creates public programming and initiatives for the Veterans of New York State and their families. In addition to traditional engagement activities for Veterans, Branch is increasing efforts to reach women, minorities, and faith-based Veterans. Additionally, among other New York State Task Forces, Branch has been appointed to serve on New York State’s Overdose Task Force[3] [4] and the New York State Women Veterans Advisory Committee.[5] [6]

Branch graduated from the Fordham University in 1990 with a B.A. degree in political science. She completed her M.A. in politics at The New School for Social Research in 2007, an MPhil and PhD in public and urban policy at the Schools of Public Engagement at The New School in 2011 and 2015, respectively. Her doctoral dissertation “Paradoxical Ebullience: Discordance Between Changing Black Racial Attitudes and Stagnation of Black Economic Progress” was revised and published as her first book Optimism At All Costs: Black Attitudes, Activism, and Advancement in Obama’s America (2018) and confronts the tension between black Americans' economic realities and the hope many felt for the future, expressed in survey data alongside the rhetoric of leading black figures.

Branch was a faculty member at Monroe College from 2004-2018, was an associate dean and associate professor in the School for Business at Metropolitan College of New York from 2018 to 2021 and was also lead adjunct professor at Saint John Fisher University’s executive leadership doctoral program from 2020-2024.

Branch was elected chair of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs for the Northeast from 2019-2021.[7]
