Lee Si-yeon (Korean: 이시연; born May 16, 2000), known mononymously as Siyeon, is a South Korean singer. She is the main vocalist of the South Korean girl band QWER, formed in 2023 as a joint venture between Tamago Production and 3Y Corporation. She is also a former member of the Japanese idol group NMB48 and its teams BII and M, becoming the group's first Korean member before graduating in August, 2023.
Early life
[edit]Siyeon was born on May 16, 2000, in Seoul, South Korea, to a family consisting of her parents and an older brother.[2]
Career
[edit]2021–2023: NMB48
[edit]Prior to her debut, Siyeon briefly trained to become an idol in Korea. After failing to attend art college due to an injury, she applied for NMB48's 7th generation but couldn't attend the final round of auditions due to the pandemic. She then re-auditioned in 2021 for their 7.5 generation and passed.[3][4] Siyeon subsequently joined NMB48 as their first Korean member on August 14, 2021.[2][5][6] She was introduced during NMB48 LIVE 2021 in Hatsu Natsu at Osaka-jo Hall where she opened the concert with "Yume wa Nigenai" from the group's 19th single Boku Datte naichau yo.[7]
During NAMBAZAAR 2022, held in Zepp Osaka Bayside between July 14–16, 2022, Siyeon was promoted from Group BII to Group M.[8]
She won 2nd place in the AKB48 Group Fifth Singing Contest, representing NMB48 Team M, held between March 2–3, 2023.[4][5]
After spending 2 years in the group, Siyeon graduated from NMB48 on August 8, 2023.[3][4]
2023–present: Debut in QWER
[edit]In July, 2023, YouTuber and web content creator Kim Gye-ran announced his plans to create a girl band inspired by the manga series Oshi no Ko, with streamer Chodan as the group's drummer.[9]
Following her departure from NMB48, Siyeon appeared on "QWER Project", a YouTube series aiming to create a girl group composed of female online personalities.[10] The project was launched by Tamago Production, a company started by Kim Gye-ran, in collaboration with 3Y Corporation. The series followed the each potential member of QWER and their incorporation into the group, their training, and daily lives.[11]
Siyeon debuted as the main vocalist of QWER on October 18, 2023, with the single album Harmony from Discord.[12] She is credited for taking part in the composition of 3 songs from the album, including the title song "Discord".[13]
