Ken Keeley (1 April1934 - 4 Aug 2020) was a highly regarded photorealist artist and is most well known for his works of those depicting New York City buildings and outdoor newsstands.
Biography
[edit]Ken Keeley was born 1934 in Brooklyn, New York and painted his first oil painting at six years old. He was influenced by his godfather, James P. Barbarite who was an accomplished artist, a graduate of Cooper Union[1]. He attended the School of industrial Arts in Manhattan and then enlisted in the Air Force and continued to paint at night and on the weekends. [2] After retiring from the Air Force in 1976, Ken continued to paint different type of subjects combining his experience and skill into painting large canvases with minute details. Living on Long Island, New York, he developed his personal style of realism that is now carrying over into other realms including nature and portraiture. However, it wasn't until 1980 that he started focusing on painting Newsstand images which he photographed in the New York City area with his 35mm camera. [3]
Work
[edit]Keeley's work focused on hyperrealistic paintings that often depict memorabilia, nostalgic scenes, and collections of objects. His artwork is celebrated for its detailed and vibrant depictions, capturing elements of pop culture and everyday life from his work in newsstands especially. In addition, it also has been featured in several television shows such as Grace Under Fire, Seinfeld and Mad About You[3].[4]
