Julian Raven is a contemporary visual artist born in Richmond-Upon-Thames, London, England, and raised in Marbella, Southern Spain.[1]

Early Life

[edit]

Julian Raven was born in Richmond-Upon-Thames, London, and moved with his family to Marbella, Spain, when he was two years old. Raven's early education in art took place in Spain, followed by formal studies at the Chelsea School of Art in London.[2]

Career

[edit]

He started a custom woodworking and cabinetmaking business but returned to painting in 2013, marking a significant moment in his artistic career. His works are characterized by vibrant colors and an energetic painting style known as "drip & splash," which involves creating art without using traditional brushes.

In 2017, Raven sought to have the painting displayed at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery, arguing that it captured an important cultural moment. When the gallery declined, Raven filed a federal lawsuit, claiming his First Amendment rights were violated. The court dismissed the case in 2019, affirming the Smithsonian's discretion in selecting exhibits.[3]

Raven’s work has been featured at conservative gatherings, including the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where it resonated with supporters of Trump’s vision.[4] His political views shifted after the Januray 6 Capitol riot by pro-Trump crowd when he asked then-president Donald Trump to resign in a 1622 words facebook post title "ABSOLUTE DESPOTISM…Dear President Trump..RESIGN!".[5]

After spending over 25 years in the United States, Raven returned to Marbella in 2023 to open a contemporary art studio, paying homage to the local artistic culture.[6]
