Josh Hager (born June 27, 1970) is an American musician, producer, and engineer. Since 2014, Hager has performed as a member of the new wave band Devo, playing guitar and keyboard.[1] The band named him "Josh 2," and he also uses the alias for his solo material.
Outside his work with Devo, Hager has released music as Garvy J. and is a founding member of ShadowParty (Mute Records), a band formed in 2016 with members of New Order, Primal Scream, and The Verve.
Hager has played in various bands since the 1990s, including The Rentals, Adam Green (of The Moldy Peaches), and Elevator Drops. His production and engineering credits include projects with Matt Sharp (Weezer, The Rentals), Miley Cyrus, Del Marquis (of Scissor Sisters), and Tracy Bonham.[2][3]
Career

[edit]Hager joined Devo in 2014[4][5][6] after the passing of keyboardist/guitarist Bob Casale – who went by Bob 2 in the band, as the other keyboardist/guitarist, Bob Mothersbaugh, was known as Bob 1. In addition to touring worldwide in the band,[7][1] Hager played guitar on Devo vocalist/bassist Gerald Casale's 2016 album It's All Devo and his 2021 single "I'm Gonna Pay U Back" and is credited for programming and editing on DEVO's 2010 album Something for Everybody.[8]
Other projects
[edit]In the 1990s, Hager was a member of the bands The Elevator Drops (Arista Records) and Backstroke to Cuba. In 1999, while living in Boston, Rivers Cuomo recommended Hager to former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp. Hager subsequently joined The Rentals as a touring guitarist. Hager continued to play on Sharp's solo tours over the next few years, during which the group covered Hager's Garvy J. song "WAR IS OVER...again." Hager also performed guitar and piano on Sharp's albums, Puckett's Versus the Country Boy in 2003 and Matt Sharp in 2004, and is credited as a producer and engineer on those releases.[citation needed]
From 2004 to 2009 Hager toured as guitarist for Adam Green.[citation needed]
In 2016, Hager formed the band ShadowParty with Tom Chapman and Phil Cunningham of New Order and Devo's Jeff Friedl.[9] Their debut LP, released by Mute Records in 2018, featured contributions from Nick McCabe of The Verve and the late Denise Johnson, formerly of Primal Scream and A Certain Ratio. ShadowParty toured in support of the album, including appearances at The Great Escape and North By Northwich Festival hosted by The Charlatans.[10]
