The International 9400 which was produced in 1986 for the 1987 model year, and gained popularity a few years later in 1990, was the first aerodynamic off-road truck manufactured by International. It featured an extended bumper at the rear of the 120" cab, in 1997 a facelift of the hood and headlights was introduced for more aerodynamics, and the dash panel of the International 9400 was redesigned in 1994 for the 1995 model year. In 1999 the first generation of the International 9400 (1987-1999) was completed, and in 1999 the second generation was introduced, and it was renamed the 9400i for the 2000 model year. It had the same cab as the 9200 series and the same subsequent engine options. years included new features such as side skirts. International also launched special editions such as the 9400 Midnight Eagle Limited Edition, which included leather interior and wood dashboard panels, ending the second generation of the International 9400 better known as the 9400i (2000-2007).

[edit]The first generation International 9400 was a heavy-duty truck manufactured by Navistar International from 1987 to 1999. This model was introduced in 1986 for the 1987 model year as part of the International 9000 series, designed for long-distance cargo transport and high-performance work. The 9400 was characterized by its aerodynamic design and highly durable engine, which included engine options from manufacturers such as Cummins, Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar. In 1997, the hood and headlights were redesigned. The dashboard was redesigned in 1994 for the 1995 model year. In 1999, it was also produced for the 2000 model year.
Main Features Engine: The first generation of the International 9400 offered high-performance diesel engine options with capacities from 300 to 500 horsepower, ideal for long-distance highway transport.
Transmission: Equipped with manual transmissions, primarily from Eaton-Fuller, with configurations including up to 13 and 18 speeds to maximize fuel efficiency and accommodate terrain with varying gradients.
Design: It featured an aerodynamic front design that improved fuel efficiency compared to previous International models. The cab offered ample space, which improved comfort on long routes.
Versions: It had various axle configurations (4x2 and 6x4) to adapt to different load needs and requirements of the transport industry.
This model was replaced by the second generation in 2000, which incorporated more technology and efficiency improvements. The first generation of the 9400 continues to be recognized for its durability and reliability, and is still a popular model among enthusiasts and second-hand transport companies.

The first-generation International 9400 received a facelift in 1997, bringing several changes to its design and functionality to adapt to market demands and improve its performance on the road. Here are the key details of the 1997-1999 facelift:
Cab Design: The 9400's cab was slightly redesigned, primarily in the grille and hood. The grille became larger and more prominent, with more modern and clean lines that improved aerodynamics. This change also facilitated engine ventilation and optimized airflow, which was essential to reduce fuel consumption on long routes.
Headlights and Front Lights: The headlights and front lights were updated, adopting a more streamlined and modern design. The new headlights offered better illumination and visibility on the road, improving safety in low-light conditions and in adverse weather.
Improved Interior: International also improved the interior, focusing on driver comfort. The dashboard was redesigned to make controls more accessible and easier to operate. New seat options and higher-quality upholstery materials were added, as well as improvements to the soundproofing system, to provide a more comfortable driving environment and reduce fatigue on long trips.
Aerodynamic Adjustments: In addition to the grille changes, the front-end design incorporated minor adjustments that further improved aerodynamics. These modifications helped reduce wind resistance, which translated into greater fuel efficiency, an important factor for transporters and fleet operators.
Technology Options: In the later model years of this generation, International began offering optional improvements to the engine and transmission management system, optimizing performance and adapting to stricter emissions regulations.
The 1997 facelift of the 9400 was an update that consolidated its position in the heavy-duty truck market, offering both an updated design and functional improvements that made the model an attractive option for cargo transport until the end of its production in 1999.

2000–2007
[edit]The International 9400i is an updated version of the International 9400, launched in 2000 as part of a significant upgrade to the 9400 line. The “i” in the name stands for “integrated,” indicating a host of improvements in aerodynamics, technology and ergonomics, tailored to meet the needs of long-haul haulers and maximize efficiency and comfort.
Key Features: Engine: The International 9400i can be equipped with several engine options, including the Cummins ISX and the Detroit Diesel Series 60, designed to meet early 2000s emissions standards. These engines provide high power and fuel efficiency, delivering between 400 and 500 HP, making it an ideal long-haul truck.
Transmission: It is available with 10-, 13- or 18-speed Eaton-Fuller manual transmissions, which provide excellent control and efficiency in a variety of load conditions. Automatic options are also available to facilitate handling and reduce driver fatigue.
Aerodynamics: One of the main focuses of the 9400i version was to improve aerodynamics. The design includes a redesigned cabin and exterior panels that reduce wind resistance, which translates into fuel savings on the highway.
Cabin and Comfort: The 9400i cabin is spacious and ergonomic, designed with driver comfort in mind. It includes cab suspension options for a smoother ride and enhanced technology, such as automatic climate control systems, adjustable seats and multiple storage compartments. The “Eagle” version of this model offers even more luxuries, including premium finishes and a home-like cabin environment.
Suspension and Stability: It is equipped with advanced suspension systems that improve stability and ride comfort. Rear air suspension is standard, providing a smooth ride even with a full load.
Technical Specifications: Axle Configuration: Commonly available in 6x4 configurations, although it can vary according to customer requirement. Load Capacity: Depending on configuration, it supports heavy loads of up to 30 tons or more. Dimensions and Weight: It has slightly more aerodynamic dimensions compared to the original 9400, and an optimized weight to improve efficiency without compromising load capacity. Applications: The International 9400i is ideal for long-distance transport, suitable for general cargo, heavy goods and other products that require reliable and efficient transport.
Conclusion: The International 9400i, produced between 2000 and 2007, represents a major improvement in the 9400 series, integrating advanced technology, aerodynamic efficiency and high driver comfort. Its power and versatility make it a preferred choice for transporters who need performance, durability and comfort on the road.
