Indian Society for Universal Dialogue, Chennai
[edit]The Indian Society for Universal Dialogue, Chennai[1][2][3][4] is a student's society at the School of Excellence in Law, Chennai affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. The ISUD borrows inspiration from the prestigious Oxford Union, a renowned students’ society established at the University of Oxford in 1823.
The ISUD was established by students of the School of Excellence in Law with the aim of fostering a culture of debate and dialogue of contemporary ideas and issues that broadly concern various themes. The ISUD was inaugurated on 30th September 2023 by Hon'ble Mr. Justice M Sundar of the Madras High Court and Mr. S. Gurukrishna Kumar, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, following the 200th year of the establishment of the Oxford Union in 2023. Dr. Patricia Théry-Hart, Director of the Alliance Française of Madras, Dr. Katharina Görgen, Director of the Goethe Institut and Mr. David Eggleston, Deputy Consul-General of Australia were guests of honour. India@100 Series
[edit]The flagship programme of the ISUD is the India@100 Series[1][2][3][4] that "seeks to engage in a comprehensive exploration of India's journey" over 100 years of its independence. The programme hosts a series of dialogues, debates, conversations, literature on themes that have shaped India.
Hon'ble Mr. Justice N Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court was featured in one of the notable conversations of the India@100 Series in April 2024. Mr. V. Sriram a noted Author and Historian was also featured in a lecture on the Legal History of Madras.
Organisational Structure
[edit]The Indian Society for Universal Dialogue is governed by its Executive Committee headed by a student President and assisted by Secretaries of various ranks and responsibilities. The Society also consists of a General Body of student Members who represent each department of study. The Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is the de jure patron of the Society. The Society is also guided by a faculty co-ordinator who is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. The functioning of the Society is governed by its by-laws.
