The Ijaw National Congress of the Americas (INCA) is a socio-cultural and educational organization that represents the interests of the Ijaw people in the United States, Canada, South and Central America as well as the Carribean who, as an ethnic group are predominantly found in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.[1][2]
History
[edit]The parent INC organization with the worldwide headquarters in Yenagoa Bayelsa State was founded in 1991 in Nigeria and has since then been advocating for the rights of the Ijaw people and promoting their socio-economic and cultural development. INCA in Americas was founded in November 2021 and the first Executive led by the Chairman, Kenneth I. Anga ACC, KSC was elected for a 3-year term in April 2022.[3]
Mission
[edit]The INCA seeks to promote unity and solidarity among the Ijaw people, and to protect their cultural heritage and traditions. The organization is also involved in advocating for the development of the Niger Delta region, which is rich in oil and gas resources but has suffered from environmental degradation and poverty.[4]
Over the years, the parent INC has been involved in various campaigns, including the struggle for inclusive resource management, participation, and environmental justice in the Niger Delta region. The organization has also played a key role in shaping via intensive lobbying efforts the political landscape of the region and country, with many Ijaw politicians holding key positions in government. The organization has also established links with other interest groups across Nigeria and internationally, with the aim of promoting the interests of the Ijaw people and achieving their aspirations of scientific, cultural, educational, economic and social advancement.[5][6][7]
