İhsan Raif Hanım (B. 1877, Beirut, Lebanon - D. April 4, 1926, Paris, France) was a poet, composer, and humanitarian activist.
Ayşe İhsan Raif was born in Beirut in 1877 and came from a Circassian heritage. She was the daughter of Köse Mehmet Raif Pasha, one of the last Ottoman viziers. Her father, often assigned to provincial duties, ensured his daughters received a quality education by employing private tutors during his travels, while he sent his sons to Europe for their education.
From a young age, Ayşe received instruction in music, literature, and French from competent tutors. She also took lessons from Danyal Efendi in Adana, which allowed her to build friendships within the Armenian community. İhsan Raif lived in a building that still stands on Rumeli Street in Nişantaşı, currently known as Taş Konak, which functions as the Şişli District Governorship office. She had a remarkable talent for literature and embodied enthusiasm and aspirations for the future.
İhsan Raif, was an important member of Hilal-i Ahmer. She worked in the organizations of the society. Recognizing the Society's important role since its establishment, she wrote poetry to provide both material and moral support. Her poems, which emphasize love for the country, highlight the contributions of caregivers who tend to the wounded soldiers. They praise thets, portray the brutal scenes of war related to lost territories, glorify martyrdom, and emphasize nationalism.
İhsan Raif demonstrated her support for the Society by writing two poems titled “Hilâl-i Ahmer.” Alongside her husband, Şehabettin Süleyman, İhsan Raif Hanım dedicated herself to helping immigrants and wounded soldiers who arrived in Istanbul from the lost regions after the Balkan War. She continued her efforts by composing poems and articles that focused on providing assistance to those in need in a very realistic manner, shedding light on the activities conducted behind the front lines.
