Synopsis
[edit]The documentary On the Trail of Democracy: Iceland explores the democratic history of Iceland, focusing on experiences of direct democracy and active citizen participation. Following the 2008 financial crisis, Iceland experienced the "Pots and Pans Revolution," a protest movement that led to the fall of the government. This popular uprising paved the way for an unprecedented participatory democracy process to draft a new constitution.
The documentary features interviews with academics, activists who took part in the Pots and Pans Revolution like Hordur Torfason, members of the Constitutional Council (Katrin Oddsdottir, Ari Teitsson, Þórhildur Þorleifsdóttir), and former Prime Minister of Iceland Katrin Jakobstottir (2017-2024).[1]
Production
[edit]The documentary was filmed in April 2017, during a period when Iceland's democratic system was gaining international attention for its transparency and civic engagement. The film, completed by students,[2] was self-produced on a budget of approximately €35,000, funded in part by university institutions and crowdfunding campaigns.
Contribution to the knowledge of the Icelandic constitution drafting process
[edit]The drafting of the new Icelandic constitution stood out due to the use of a consensus model, an approach where every decision had to be unanimously approved by the members of the Constitutional Council. This process was strongly influenced by feminist principles, notably those advocated by Þórhildur Þorleifsdóttir, an activist and Council member. The documentary delves into this collaboration method, adding to the academic understanding of Iceland’s constitution drafting process.[3]
