Hwangsaguri
hwangsaguri was a StarCraft 1 Terran player (formerly an S rank Zerg) on the Korean ladder who never played for a professional team.
Playstyle
hwangsaguri’s playstyle was very aggressive and relied on quick army movement, good decision-making, and incredibly high APM. While hwangsaguri was generally considered a weaker macro player against high S Rank opponents, his early aggression often payed off with wins, most notably against his earlier race, Zerg.
After studying several aggressive Terran build orders popularized by the Terran player BoxeR, and weighing the risks, hwangsaguri developed and played the 8rax variant of the two starport build. As a former Zerg player, he was familiar with the idea of “mineral boosting” which helped him to start his barracks sometimes as early as 0:55 seconds into the game. hwangsaguri intended to use the possible early advantage gained by 8rax to tech into two starports to start wraith production. Depending on the situation, and how confident of his ability to close out the game, he would either follow his attack with more aggression, or play standard macro. Just like BoxeR, hwangsaguri would often transition into the biological composition with marines and medics to support. Unlike BoxeR, he would always research +1 armor above the +1 weapon upgrade from the Engineering Bay. He hoped that +1 armor would help against heavy zergling attacks and with sunken busts based on the capped 20 damage to biological units that sunken colonies provide.
Biography
He enjoyed playing the game ever since the age of 5. While not a competitive player at that point, he simply loved to mine out the map with 5 SCVs with fewer than 5 APM. At his competitive “retirement”, he had achieved an average of 550 APM.
Final Words
Although only a ladder player, his replays and coaching during games have helped many StarCraft players.

[edit]Hwangsaguri
Hwangsaguri was a notable player in the StarCraft: Brood War community, primarily known for his prowess as a Terran player on the Korean ladder. Although he never played for a professional team, hwangsaguri earned recognition for his aggressive playstyle and strategic innovations in the game. Before transitioning to Terran, he was an S-rank Zerg player, which contributed to his deep understanding of the game and influenced his later strategies.
Playstyle
Hwangsaguri was renowned for his highly aggressive approach to the game. His playstyle focused on rapid army movement, quick decision-making, and an extraordinarily high APM (Actions Per Minute), often averaging around 550 APM at his peak. Despite being considered a weaker macro player compared to other high S-rank opponents, hwangsaguri’s early-game aggression frequently led to victories, especially against Zerg opponents, his former race.
Inspired by the legendary Terran player BoxeR, hwangsaguri adopted and refined several aggressive Terran build orders. One of his signature strategies was the 8rax variant of the two starport build. This build involved constructing a barracks as early as 0:55 seconds into the game, a tactic that hwangsaguri perfected by utilizing his knowledge of “mineral boosting,” a technique he had learned as a former Zerg player.
The 8rax allowed hwangsaguri to gain an early advantage, which he would use to tech into two starports and begin wraith production. Depending on the game’s progress and his confidence in closing out the match, he would either continue with aggressive tactics or transition to a more standard macro-oriented playstyle. Unlike BoxeR, who typically prioritized weapon upgrades, hwangsaguri always opted for the +1 armor upgrade from the Engineering Bay, believing it provided better defense against Zergling attacks and sunken colony defenses, which deal capped damage to biological units.
Biography
Hwangsaguri’s love for StarCraft began at the young age of five, long before he became a competitive player. In his early years, he played the game for fun, often mining out maps with just five SCVs and maintaining fewer than five APM. As he honed his skills over the years, his APM skyrocketed, reaching an impressive average of 550 by the time he decided to step back from competitive play.
Legacy
While hwangsaguri never joined a professional team, his contributions to the StarCraft community were significant. His replays and in-game coaching provided valuable insights to other players, helping them improve their strategies and gameplay. Hwangsaguri remains a respected figure among StarCraft enthusiasts on ladder, particularly for those who appreciate the nuances of aggressive Terran play.
