Founded in 2005, Helsinki Design Week is the largest design and architecture festival in the Nordic countries. Held annually in September, the festival showcases emerging talents and trends in the creative industries, collaborating with a diverse range of partners.
The festival provides a platform for city residents to engage in urban development and discussions through the lens of design. Its international and multidisciplinary programme includes approximately 150 events each year, catering to both professionals and the general public. The event calendar comprises main events, companion events, and satellite events.
Helsinki Design Week has grown into the most significant event promoting Helsinki's and Finland's reputation in design. It has played a central role in fostering a city culture centred around design and architecture. The theme changes annually, framing the special exhibitions and events in the programme. Helsinki Design Week was founded by Luovi Productions Ltd.
Main Events
[edit]The main events include the Design Market, a warehouse sale held at the Cable Factory; Design Diplomacy, a series of discussions hosted in ambassadors’ residences; PechaKucha Night, a fast-paced presentation series; Open Studios, an evening of open doors at creative workspaces; and annual seminars and exhibitions focusing on design and architecture. The programme also features the HDW Children’s Design Week and Helsinki Design Night, an evening club event.
The main venue of Helsinki Design Week changes annually, and in recent years, the festival has occupied iconic locations such as the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, a Renaissance palace in Erottaja, the previous headquarters of Enso-Gutzeit designed by Alvar Aalto called familiarly the “Sugar Cube”, the Merikortteli complex in Punavuori, and a former bank hall in Hakaniemi.
Companion and Satellite Events
[edit]Helsinki Design Week’s programme is created in collaboration with a wide network of stakeholders and the design community. Through an open call for events for the programme, over 150 events are selected each year, including fashion shows, product launches, exhibitions, workshops, and discussions. Participants range from businesses and sponsors to design universities, professional organisations, and other non-profit entities in the field.
Helsinki Design Weekly
[edit]Luovi Productions Ltd has also established Helsinki Design Weekly, Finland’s only independent media dedicated to design and architecture. Weekly is a multilingual platform comprising a weekly newsletter, an online magazine, and a radio programme, available in both Finnish and English. Through its media channels, Luovi has transformed its operations into a year-round and more expansive initiative.
