Hatem Elghezal (Arabic: حاتم الغزال; born January 27, 1971) is a Tunisian physician and geneticist. He is the Consultant and Head of the Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics Division at Prince Sultan Military Medical City (PSMMC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is recognized for his expertise in cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, and human genetics.

Early Life and Education

Hatem Elghezal was born in Bizerte, Tunisia. He earned his Medical Doctorate (MD) in 1997 from the Faculty of Medicine in Sousse, Tunisia. His doctoral thesis, focused on the cytogenetic study of male pseudohermaphroditism, earned an award for excellence.

In 1998, he completed a diploma in Cellular and Molecular Genetics at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Human Genetics from the University of Paris VII in 1999. He trained in advanced cytogenetics at Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris.

Career

Dr. Elghezal began his professional career in Tunisia as an academic at the Faculty of Medicine in Sousse. Between 2006 and 2010, he served as Associate Professor and Head of Research Units in Genetics at Farhat Hached Hospital in Sousse.

Since 2010, he has been the Consultant and Head of the Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics Division at PSMMC in Riyadh. His work includes laboratory management, introducing advanced genetic technologies, and ensuring adherence to international accreditation standards like CAP and JCI.

Research and Contributions

Dr. Elghezal has conducted over 40,000 cytogenetic analyses. His significant contributions include:

  • Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and screening for chromosomal anomalies
  • Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis (NIPD) of chromosomal abnormalities
  • Molecular diagnostics using Array CGH and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)
  • Genetic mutation detection in solid tumors for personalized medicine.
