Hans Mahr (born 17 May 1949) is an Austrian journalist and media executive. Mahr was the editor-in-chief at RTL in Cologne from 1994 to 2004. In 2005, Mahr was appointed to the board of the newly created Sports and New Business division at Premiere AG (now Sky). Since 2006, he has been an independent media consultant with his company and serves as board member of Kronen Zeitung since 2024.[1]

Career

[edit]

Mahr started his professional career as journalist at the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung. From 1972 to 1977, Mahr was the head of the politics department and left his position from 1977 to 1979 to become the office manager for the mayor of Vienna, Leopold Gratz.[2]

Mahr also worked as a media consultant and head of public relations for Chancellor Bruno Kreisky from 1979 to 1983 and subsequently, from 1983 to 1988, as a consultant for the publisher of the Kronen Zeitung Hans Dichand.[3]

In 1985, Mahr took over the management of the Austrian office of the German private broadcaster RTL and in 1986 of the German magazine "Stern".[4]

Mahr returned to the Kronen Zeitung in in 1989. He was appointed managing director by Hans Dichand and worked in this position until 1994. During his tenure there, he was appointed vice president of the Association of Austrian Newspaper Publishers (VÖZ) in 1993.[4]

From 1994 to 2004, Mahr was the editor-in-chief at RTL in Cologne, and from 2000 to 2002, he was the managing director of RTL's internet subsidiary, RTL New Media.[5]

Since April 2006, Mahr has been self-employed with his Cologne company MahrMedia and returned as a consultant to the RTL Group in 2007. Furthermore, he managed Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher. Since the primary goal of negotiating a Formula 1 contract for 2008 and beyond was not achieved, Schumacher parted ways with Mahr.[6]

In January 2024, Hans Mahr was elected to the supervisory board of Kronen Zeitung.[7]
