Dr. Hamidreza Zareipour is a Canadian electrical engineer and professor at the University of Calgary, known for his research in smart grids and energy storage systems.
Early life and Education
[edit]Dr. Zareipour was born in Darab, Iran. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from K. N. Toosi University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, in 1995. He then pursued a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tabriz, Iran, which he completed in 1997. Dr. Zareipour earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 2006.
Academic and Professional Career
[edit]He began his academic career as a Lecturer at Persian Gulf University in Bushehr, Iran, from 1998 to 2002. After completing his Ph.D., he joined the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, in 2007 as an Assistant Professor.
He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and became a full Professor in 2015. He has been providing consultancy in the area of electricity markets, energy storage and forecasting.[1] He has trained numerous graduate students, including 27 Ph.D. and 25 M.Sc. students.
Research Contributions
[edit]Dr. Zareipour is internationally recognized for his contributions to sustainable grids and clean electricity research. His research focuses on the operation and planning of modernized electricity grids, explicitly addressing the integration of renewable energy sources (e.g., wind and solar), energy storage systems, and electricity market modeling. He was promoted to the Fellow Class of IEEE for his contributions to the modeling of energy storage for system operation and planning.[2] He has made significant contributions to modeling the optimal sizing and operation of energy storage systems for energy and ancillary services applications. He is a proponent of Energy Storage as a Service and Energy Storage as a Transmission Asset based on the principles of Sharing Economy where the ownership of storage assets are disconnected from their operation and offer control.[3] He has made several contributions to electricity market price forecasting. Particularly, he pioneers electricity price classification[4] and evaluating electricity market price forecasts based on their economic benefits to the users.[5]
Industry Impact and Entrepreneurship
[edit]Dr. Zareipour's research has also received industry support, securing millions of dollars in research grants.
As the Academic Director for Entrepreneurial Initiatives at the Schulich School of Engineering, Dr. Zareipour has promoted entrepreneurship among students. He designed and teaches two popular 4th-year courses focused on technical design, product development, and commercialization.
