The Haji Golam Sultan Chowdhury Mosque is a historical mosque located in Amanullah Bhuiyan Bari in Mithanala, Mirsharai Upazila, Chattogram,[1] Bangladesh. Constructed in 1928 by Sheikh Haji Golam Sultan Chowdhury,[2] a renowned zamindar, and philanthropist who devoted his wealth for education, religion and heritage. The architecture is a Mughal-inspired one, and was built using materials brought from Burma (present day Myanmar). It holds an important cultural significance in the region.

History

Sheikh Haji Golam Sultan Chowdhury was born in 1883 into the affluent Amanullah Bhuiyan family of Mithanala. After achieving success in business in Burma (now Myanmar), he returned to Bangladesh and devoted himself to faith and philanthropy. The mosque was built as part of his philanthropic initiatives, with the objective of providing a place for locals, and visitors to rest and offer prayers. Chowdhury was known to often odder food to travelers through the mosque. He passed away in 1954 and was buried beside the mosque.

Architecture

The Mosque is a traditional Mughal architectural, using imported stones and intricate carvings that enhance its aesthetic appeal. Its design includes a large front courtyard and a large pond, adding to its tranquil atmosphere. The mosque's facade contains inscriptions that detail its construction date and acknowledge Sheikh Haji Golam Sultan Chowdhury as its founder.
