The main source of this article is book "The Greatest Weightlifters of All Time Vol 1 - Men" ISBN-13 / 978-1999668839.
This is a list of the greatest weightlifting performances throughout history, as recognized by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). Weightlifting is a sport where athletes attempt to lift the heaviest weight possible in two exercises: the snatch (lifting the barbell from the floor to overhead in one continuous motion) and the clean and jerk (lifting the barbell from the floor to the shoulders in one motion, then overhead in a second motion). The total weight lifted across both exercises determines the winner.
The IWF's weight class changes (1993,1998, 2018) can make it difficult to compare historical performances. To address this, Sinclair coefficient is used, a statistical method that adjusts lifts for weight class variations.
Sinclair coefficient formula:
[edit](This formula represents the coefficients used between 2021-2024)
Y = -AX² + BX + C: This is the basic equation used to calculate the Sinclair coefficient.
Y: Represents the Sinclair coefficient (a number).
X: Represents the logarithm (base 10) of the ratio between the lifter's bodyweight (x) and the current world record holder's bodyweight in the heaviest weight class (b). (X = log(x/b))
A, B, and C: These are constants with specific values that change every Olympic cycle based on statistical analysis of recent world records. The current values for 2021-2024 are:
A = 0.722 762 521
B = 0.825 281 312
C = 0.068 870 357
Criteria for "Greatest" Performances:
[edit]Total Weight Lifted: Generally, the lifter with the highest combined weight (snatch + clean and jerk) is considered to have performed the best.
Sinclair Coefficient: This is a statistical method used to compare performances across different weight classes and eras, as weightlifting standards have evolved over time.
Historical Significance: Some performances stand out due to the context, such as breaking world records or achieving dominance in a competitive era.
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF): The IWF is the governing body for weightlifting worldwide. They are responsible for setting competition rules, maintaining world records, and overseeing international weightlifting events. You can find more information about the IWF on their website: https://beta.iwf.sport/.
The following table includes the greatest weightlifting performances by IWF Sinclair coefficient.
