Garrett T. Capps is an American songwriter, producer, and musician from San Antonio, Texas. He has coined the term “Kraut-Country” to partially describe his sound, blending elements of Country and Tex-Mex from his native Texas with Kraut rock and experimental music.[1]
Life
[edit]Growing up in San Antonio, Texas Capps cites his earliest influences from 90’s pop radio, including the Wallflowers’ “Bringing Down the Horse” and Foo Fighters “Colour and the Shape” [2]. His first instruments were guitar and drums, playing drums in punk and doom metal bands in San Antonio. [3]
Capps is a co-owner of the Lonesome Rose honky tonk in San Antonio.[4]
During the pandemic lockdown, Capps organized and hosted the online “Viva Telethon” in 2020 and 2021 with Texas Public Radio to raise money for the arts in San Antonio. Special guest interviews included Ron Nirenberg, Matt Bonner, and Carole Baskin. [5][6]

[edit]- Y Los Lonely Hipsters (2016) Garrett T. Capps debut album with “The Lonely Hipsters” a 2013 band formed with San Antonio rock musicians from the Taco Land scene. [7] Released during Fiesta San Antonio in April of 2016 [8], The album marks Capps’ initial foray in to tex-mex rock n’ roll. The song ‘Born in San Antone’ was on Season 3, Episode 1 of the Showtime series Billions in 2018. [9], [10]
- I Love San Antone (2021 Vinyl Ranch Records) A pandemic-recorded album that celebrates the San Antonio country music sound and features musicians from San Antonio and Central Texas. including Corey Baum, Tommy Detamore, Bobby Flores, Santiago Jiménez Jr., Ron Knuth, Georgia Parker, Kathryn Legendre, Max Baca and Josh Baca of Los Texmaniacs, & Augie Meyers. - Still Kicking! (Santiago Jiménez Jr.) (2021 Hardcharger Records) A Capps produced collection of traditional conjunto songs by Santiago Jiménez Jr. [12] [13]
The Shadows Trilogy and NASA Country
[edit]The Shadows Trilogy was Capps first exploration of the self coined ‘Kraut Country’ sound, starting with “In the Shadows (Again).” It also marked the formation of the NASA Country band, featuring San Antonio musicians odie., Torin Metz, Justin Boyd, and Kory Cook. [14][15]

- People are Beautiful (2022 Spaceflight Records) First release as ‘Garrett T. Capps and NASA Country.’ Recorded in 2020 at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, TX and mixed by Sean O’Keefe. Rolling Stone called ‘People are Beautiful’ “An urgent, inventive reimagining of Texas music.”[16]
