The Gandhi Bhawan is a major landmark of the city of Jammu, India encompassing statue of Mohandas K. Gandhi, study center to bring in nationalists in the bureaucracy, library, and other gandhian activities.

Introduction

[edit]

Gandhi Bhawan Jammu, adjoining New Secretariat at the foots of Prade Ground Jammu is at the site of drained pond where once Mahatma Gandhi gave his maiden speech in Jammu just before partition in 1947, it was founded with the donations from Gandhian patrons of Jammu and since than being governed by Gandhi Bhawan Committee. It houses a prayer and lecture hall with substantial collection of books on the Gandhian literature especially Yoga & Naturopathy, a study library and lecture hall and another section involved in KVIC activities.[1]

History

[edit]

Gandhi saw a "ray of hope" on his maiden visit to Kashmir (3 days in Srinagar and 2 days in Jammu) during first week of August 1947, accompanying him Dr Sushila Nayyar recalls that the neighboring villages attracted both men and women who came to catch a sight of the Mahatma. People, whether friends or enemies, are amazed by the influence he holds over the masses. His presence alone appears to comfort them in a peculiar way.[2]

On 18th of April, 1954 President Rajendra Prasad formally inaugurated Gandhi Bhawan, ennobled by full-size marble statue of Mahatma Gandhi embedded above the entrance door with hall for prayer and Charkha (spinning wheel) activities,[3] another section displayed Basohli paintings under Dogra Art Gallery which later on moved to a new structure,[4] and a library and study center were established in its stead.
