Gabe the Dog is an Internet meme that surfaced at around 2013, under the title of "The New Dog Source", which was a video of the Eskimo and Pomeranian dog barking in a tone deemed as "borking", and so a meme.
Gabe became a more popular meme after that, and started to get involved in remixes that involved the dog barking at different tones to effectively sing a song. One of the most popular remixes of this dog was published by the youtuber shaliek, which featured the Herp Alpert song "The Midnight Tango", and has since been viewed over 400,000 times since its upload on January 27th, 2013.
Structure
[edit]Gabe the Dog remixes included the sound of the Eskimo-Pomeranian dog "borking" (a term affiliated with the dog's barking) being modified and replicated to sound like a song. The videos usually included a clip of the dog barking.
In some cases, the video included the face of the dog edited to fit to a persons face, being moved around according to the person's movements, while barking to the tone of the music. Videos also included multiples of the dog being used as accompaniment.
Origin
[edit]The dog's origins come from his owner, a Canadian YouTuber known as deathtrips (formerly gravycp). The dog was picked up from a shelter, having entered his senior years. The Eskimo-Pomeranian dog was put up on youtube by the owner, and as the video gained traction, so did the idea of remixes.
History
[edit]Gabe the Dog's first video was uploaded by user deathtrips (formerly gravycp) on January 8th, 2013. The video was titled "The New Dog Source", where it gained over 60,000 views in the next three years. On November 1st, 2014, deathtrips uploaded the video "Newest Dog Source", which has since been deleted.
Spread
[edit]One of the most popular Gabe remixes was published by user shaliek, featuring the Herp Alpert song "The Midnight Tango", and has since been viewed over 400,000 times since its upload on January 27th, 2013. On Febuary 6th, 2013, YouTube user Lewdachris uploaded a Gabe remix featuring the song "Time by Air", which was viewed over 130,000 times since its upload. On June 14th, 2013, YouTube user skylark uploaded a Gabe remix featuring "I Am A God" by Kanye West, which has been viewed over 160,000 times since its upload. On July 4th, 2014, YouTube user widddddd uploaded a Gabe remix which swapped Gabe's bark with the word "f***" taken from a video of a teenage boy, which got over 150,000 views since its upload.
Death
[edit]On January 27th, 2017, The Gabe the Dog Facebook page posted an announcement that Gabe the Dog had passed away from heart complications. The post recieved thousands of reactions and comments within the first hour of its publishing, many commenting their condolences and honor to Gabe, the post read,
"Friends,
It is with condolences that I must tell you Gabe passed away yesterday
morning. He had been struggling with his heart for quite some time,
and it very suddenly became worse. He went peacefully, being loved
with his family with a smile on his face.
All things considered, Gabe had a good run. He was already pushing
his senior years when we picked him up from the shelter, but still
blessed us with six years of loving, dancing and borking. His borks
never slowed down until his very last day!
Not only was Gabe a wonderful part of our family his entertainment
career was greater than I ever could have dreamed of. Something that
started as a joke for my friends quickly became a global sensation,
going as far as national TV in Japan! It really meant a lot to our family
to see the joy he spread to everyone. We feel we made a positive
effect on the world by sharing Gabe's smile with everyone.
And with that, I thank you. You, the content creators, the fans leaving
comments, sharing his pictures and spreading the message, made
Gabe into something very special that won't be forgotten. Gabe may
have crossed the rainbow bridge but his joy remains with all of us.
Sleep tight, pupper!"
Remembrance
[edit]Since Gabe's death in 2017, YouTube memorials for the dog started to blow up. The tribunal videos mostly started its peak during 2017, but still some more recent YouTube videos of the subject have been published. Gabe was remembered for the action the dog was associated with, known as "borking", and Gabe was titled as being "the best dog ever" by most. The entertainment the dog brought to people over the span of five years was a great cause toward the memories shared by most old YouTube users, and although Gabe's memorabilia has decreased greatly since 2017, most old YouTube users can recall feeling sadness toward the dogs death.
