The GE 7FDL Series is a series of prime movers created by GE Transportation for use on their diesel electric locomotives. It was originally created in 1958 for the U18B, and saw use all the way until the AC4400CW in 1993.[1] There are 3 different configurations of cylinders, 8 cylinder, 12 cylinder, and 16 cylinder.

History

[edit]

The 7FDL series was originally created as the FVBL engine by Cooper-Bessemer. GE then purchased rights to improve the design and renamed it to the 7FDL series for their Universal Series.

7HDL

[edit]

GE also produced a variant of the 7FDL called the 7HDL for the AC6000CW. The engine, produced from 1995 to 2001, had 6,250 hp
(4,660 kW) and an AC alternator. The engine stopped being produced as railroads did not find the need for such powerful locomotives, making the AC6000CW the only locomotive to use the 7HDL prime mover.
