In September 2015, Experian a credit information services agency, experienced a significant data breach, exposing the personal information of approximately 15 million consumers who had applied for T-Mobile services between September 2013 and September 2015. The compromised data included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and identification numbers.[1]. How the Breach Occurred

The breach occurred due to unauthorized access to an Experian server containing data for T-Mobile's credit application processes. This access allowed the hacker to steal sensitive information of millions of consumers[2]

2020 Data Breach

In August 2020, Experian experienced a data breach exposing personal details of 24 million South Africans and 793,749 businesses*[3]. This breach involved sensitive information being accessed by a suspected fraudster.

How the Breach Occurred

The breach occurred when a suspected fraudster, posing as Tebogo Mogashoa, a director of Talis Holdings, obtained the data from Experian. Experian reported the incident to law enforcement and regulatory authorities. Banks worked with Experian to identify affected customers and secure their information.
