Excelsio
[edit]Excelsio is a digital media outlet founded in 2005[1] by Nelson Alarcón (better known on social media as alarcónnelson)[2]. It originated in Sogamoso, Colombia, with the aim of offering local and regional news through a digital platform.
History
[edit]Foundation
[edit]Nelson Alarcón founded Excelsio in 2005, driven by the lack of information available during his research on the history of Sogamoso. Inspired by the press of the 19th and early 20th centuries, he decided to create a digital media outlet that would provide local and historical content about Sogamoso and the Province of Sugamuxi. Initially, Excelsio was published on Yahoo’s GeoCities platform, with a weekly edition prepared on Fridays and released on Saturdays[3]. The name Excelsio comes from the Latin word "excelsus," which translates to "superior" or "the highest."
Evolution
[edit]A year after its launch, the growing number of inquiries led Excelsio to migrate to its own domain, excelsio.net, in 2006. This allowed for greater storage capacity and more autonomous content management. In 2008, the newspaper expanded its coverage, shifting from a sole focus on Sogamoso to becoming the first virtual newspaper in Boyacá.
Expansion and Social Media
[edit]Starting in 2008, Excelsio integrated new forms of reader engagement, allowing comments on news articles and, since 2009, interacting through Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube. This strategy resulted in a significant increase in traffic, reaching over a million page views in 2010. During this period, the site also utilized the domains excelsio.co[4] and excelsio.com.co.
Contributors
[edit]Excelsio never established a permanent staff. Most of the work was handled by Alarcón, with various contributors joining over the years, such as the renowned journalist César Rodríguez Granados[5] and many others who spontaneously submitted their contributions for publication.
The Change
[edit]In 2017, after nearly 13 years of uninterrupted work, Excelsio temporarily suspended its activities. The outlet remained on hiatus until 2020, when it decided to resume publishing information, this time with an international focus and publications in English.
