Espressif Systems is a fabless semiconductor company based in Shanghai, China that specializes in designing low-cost Wi-Fi microcontrollers and SoCs for Internet of Things devices..[1][2][3]. Its products include the ESP8266 and the ESP32. In addition to being used in various commercial IoT devices[4][5], Espressif's microcontrollers have also become popular with the DIY electronics and hardware hacker communities due to their low cost and wireless communication (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) capabilities[6].
Espressif made its initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in July 2019[7].
In 2022, Espressif announced that they would move to the RISC-V instruction set architecture for all new designs (they had previously used the Tensilica Xtensa core architecture)[8].
Since 2022, Espressif has held an online conference, Espressif DevCon, for developers who use their hardware. Speakers at the 2022 conference included Limor Fried[9][10]
In April 2024, Espressif acquired a majority stake in M5Stack, a maker of stackable computing modules that use ESP32 microcontrollers[11]
