The Deshprabhu family are a well know family having royal lineage starting from Kalyan Prabhu, whose two sons Suryabhan & Chandrabhan expanded the rule of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins in Kudal region of Maharashtra. Later, the family became "Deshmukhs" of Ali Adil Shah of Bijapur who titled the Family as Deshprabhu of Kasba. This word "Kasba or Cassaba" was used to describe Kudal Kasba. in the year 1530 AD, Mahadev Prabhu then descendent coronated himself the king ruler of Kudal. In the civil war post 1666 was the result of "bhaubandki" amongst the siblings which forced Narayan Prabhu, the Kudal Samant to disappear from Kudal and this royal family took refuge in Hanjunem today known as Anjuna village in Portuguese old conquest of Bardez province. During this stage, the Rauraje Palace was built by Nagesh Deshprabhu, who acquired huge property and had three sons in Pernem.

Later, during the Portuguese Rule, The family were awarded the peerage - Viscount of Pernem which was the highest ranked Asian (Hindu) in European nobility. The first title of Baron was given to the ruler of Pernem, Vassudeva Deshprabhu, a nobleman with office in the Palace, perhaps the wealthiest zamindar of Portuguese India, residing in his Palace in Pernem, by decree of 14/6 /1878 (Luís I of Portugal), His son Atmaram Vassudeva Deshprabhu, Commander of the Order of Christ (1891), was elevated to Viscount by decree of 19/8/1893 (Carlos I of Portugal). There is succession from the first Viscount to the present day. MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu and Pernem Municipal Council member and politician Vasudeva Deshprabhu are a direct descendants. Jitendra Deshprabhu had the title re-affirmed by Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza heir to the throne of Portugal in the 21st Century.
