Daytona Beach Ocean Towers
[edit]Daytona Beach Ocean Towers, commonly known as "The Towers" is a historic condominium complex located at 2800 N Atlantic Ave, Daytona Beach, Florida. Built in 1964, it is a prominent 17-story building with a Lower Lobby and Lobby Level, with views of the Atlantic Ocean to the East and the Halifax River to the West.
History
[edit]The first tower in the "Ortana Park" neighborhood was constructed in 1964 and converted into condominiums by Eastern Development Corporation in 1974 with plans for a second tower, which was never realized. However, an original diorama showcasing the envisioned second tower still exists within the condominium complex. Known as the grandfather of all high-rises in Florida, The Towers played a pioneering role in the region's architectural landscape being the first high-rise between Jacksonville and Miami over 10 stories.
Architecture and Features
[edit]The Towers stands as a concrete and rebar structure, featuring two elevators and 12 stacks of units. Units are categorized as 1 Bedroom, 1 Bedroom Deluxe, and 2 Bedroom, with strategic placement based on floor and proximity to the elevators. The building is designed to provide ocean views to all units, and depending on the floor, a view of the Halifax River.
Amenities and Commercial Units
[edit]Amenities and Commercial Units The Lower Lobby houses several commercial units, including a dental lab, travel office, and real estate brokers and agents. The Lobby Level, adorned with stone, mirrors, and a fountain, features a receptionist area for guests and vendors. The building employs staff seven days a week during business hours to address concerns and needs.
Community Resilience
[edit]Daytona Beach Ocean Towers has weathered numerous storms, including hurricanes Dora (1964), David (1979), Floyd (1999), (Charley, Frances, and Jeanne (2004)), Maththew (2016), Ian, and Nichole in 2022. While the Atlantic Ocean claimed the seawall and the pool in 2022, extensive renovations, including a new seawall completed in December 2023, showcase the building's resilience. Plans for a state-of-the-art pool and deck between the envisioned Towers are underway and expected to be ADA compliant, and set to be completed in 2024.
Future Developments
[edit]As part of the 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee celebration at the end of the year, the community will honor members and vendors who contributed to maintaining and rebuilding elements of the condominium. A significant renovation of the parking garage took place in 2021 and 2022, confirming its integrity through static load testing.
