David Watkyns (born June 21, 1989)[1] is a singer, songwriter, musician and actor from Cape Town, South Africa.

David Watkyns is a songwriter and musician from Pinelands, Cape Town, South Africa.

Born June 21st, 1989, David was surrounded by a musical family. His father Brian, now politician[2], was a songwriter, guitarist and singer in a local Christian rock ’n roll band Kerygma. His mother Ann is an Occupational Therapist[3], plays piano and flute. His three siblings Catherine, Emily and James are all multi-instrumentalist.

Starting piano at age 7 and trumpet at 8, David was inspired by regular visits to concerts and rehearsals of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. He attended Pinelands High School where he was regularly involved in the music and drama department productions, as well as attending Beau Soleil Music Center for trumpet tutoring. He then graduated with a Bachelors of Music from University of Cape Town in Jazz Studies.[4]

Career

Before his debut release as a solo recording artist, David was best known for his performances with Arno Carstens and member of rock group Springbok Nude Girls.[5]

In September 2019, his debut single Magic was released.

Personal Life

David married Carina Frey in October 2018.[6] They have one son, Finn.
