David Toub, born on January 7, 1961 in Newark, New Jersey, is a distinguished American composer with a diverse background in both music and medicine.
In his early years, Toub pursued violin lessons and began composing during his junior high school years in Millburn. He further honed his skills by attending composition courses at Mannes College of Music and the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School from 1975 to 1979.
Toub initially explored the realm of twelve-tone music, gaining recognition when his piece, "Four Landscapes for Six Instruments," premiered at Symphony Space in New York in 1980, performed by the ensemble North/South Consonance. Over time, he transitioned toward a (post)minimalist style, with his work "Objects for marimba, piano, and electronic organ" premiering at the 2006 Sequenza 21 concert, performed by Hugh Sung, Daniel Beliavsky, and Bill Solomon at Elebash Hall, City University of New York. Toub's compositions have been showcased by various artists and ensembles, including the Diverse Instrument Ensemble, percussionists Bill Solomon and Mike Lunoe, the San Diego New Music/NOISE Ensemble, pianists Stéphane Ginsburgh and Nicolas Horvath, Russian cellist Maxim Zolotarenko, the University of Tennessee at Martin Contemporary Music Group, the duo Minimal, and Japanese violinist Yuka Matsumoto. His works have been commercially recorded, with three albums released under the OgreOgress label. Notably, in 2015, his album "Ataraxia," featuring two piano compositions (“Quartet for Piano” and “For Four”), was recorded by Stéphane Ginsburgh for the Cologne-based Maria de Alvear World Edition label.
Toub holds an AB and MD from the University of Chicago and an MBA with a concentration in management information systems from Drexel University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Since 2008, he has served as the Medical Director and Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs at Gynesonics, a medical device company based in California. Additionally, Toub has extensive experience in the medical field, having worked as the Medical Director for Planned Parenthood in Philadelphia, serving on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union, and volunteering for ActionAIDS.
