In August of 2023, Liao, then Damarea Ogbuewu, was announced as the first African to compete in more than three global writing competitions.[8] [9]

Liao was advanced to Miss China in October of 2023 after resigning from her title as Miss Chesnee in the Miss South Carolina pageant.[10] Her advancement into the program made her the first African to compete in a Chinese beauty pageant.[11]

In October of 2023, Liao was named a youth delegate to Ghana as a nod to her persistent push to for a protection plan for Ghana's schools during the peak of kidnappings taking place across Africa.[12]

In May of 2024, Liao released a comment that was deemed 'controversial' and 'sexist' on social media towards American socialite Kim Kardashian.[13] The statement caused controversy due to her already pageant platform of women's equality.[14][15]

In June of 2024, a debate sparked regarding Liao's mixed nationality and cultural background. Liao identifies and 'Afro-Asian' which includes her Japanese and Nigerian roots. Questions arose as to whether Liao was right to identify as both Japanese and Nigerian. [18] The debate intensified after Liao refused to share pictures of her parents on social media, leading to a series of incidents where Liao was called a racial slur, as it is referred to in the United States. She was also accused of 'cultural appropriation' as it relates to her ethical appreciation, and makeup choices.

In August of 2024, Liao was rumored to be romantically involved with American actor, Zac Efron.[19]
