Crybaby (ครายเบบี้) is an art toy created by Thai designer Nisa Srikumdee (นิสา ศรีคำดี), the first CRYBABY collection was officially released on 2017 and became famous among Asia such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. The inspiration of cry baby is on tear drop to show that we can show our weakness sometimes. Cry baby has launched 4 collections which are Crying in The Woods, Crying Parade, Monster Tears, and Lonely Christmas.

Moreover, Cry baby also hold exhibition such as "Everybody cries sometimes" and "Cry Me A River". Crybaby was included in many collaborations. These are all collaboration projects that including POP MART Three Two One! Happy Chinese New Year series, Crybaby Bumper Car model, Popmart The Year Of Tiger Series, and POPMART LOONG PRESENTS THE 2024. Recent project, there is a new collaboration between cry baby and power puff girls and this collection is launched on March 2024

History of the artist

Ms. Nisa Srikumdee (นิสา ศรีคำดี), Mod (มด) or Ms. Molly (artist name) graduated with a bachelor's degree in Visual Communication Design Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts from Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University. Ms. Molly has worked more than 7 years as a graphic designer in a planning arrangement for weddings company until 2016 that every festivities were stopped to join in expressing condolences for Majesty King Rama IX, making weddings and events which is the main income of the company all canceled affected Ms. Molly to take a break from work. However, this was time that Molly spend time on herself to start chasing her passion again which are creating crafts and sculptures that she has liked to do since childhood.

Molly tried handcrafting Crybaby dolls and posted them on her personal Instagram account for fun with no intention of turning them into a business, but this work has caught the attention of Chinese toy collectors who wanted to buy her work even though this work It was just a prototype. Until in 2017, the first CRYBABY collection was officially released. Today, CRYBABY has become a well-known product in the collectible toy industry in many countries. Most customers come from Asia such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. And most recently in 2021, Ms. Molly was able to establish her own company named Molly Factory Company Limited by products produced in this company will be divided into 2 types: 1.Mass Production or a large number of products produced from a factory. 2.Handmade, which is every handmade craft product that produce only a few pieces at a time and open only a few times per year depending on the situation and every round of sales Products will always be sold out from the first minute. Ms. Molly is considered the first and only Thai artist who has signed a contract with POPMART.

Inspiration

The character of Crybaby started drawing since Ms. Molly was in university as a diary to express the emotional stories or sensitive aspects of her daily lives which initially had a picture of a crying rabbit Until it developed into the present Crybaby. Since Ms. Molly was a child, her mother was very harsh. She would always get hit when she cry and tell her to stop and Ms. Molly felt curious about why she couldn't cry at that time. Ms. Molly thought that as we grow up our feelings are more complicated than that. People didn't cry just because they get hit, but they cry because they are hurt, or feel pressured, or feel uncomfortable inside and crying is not wrong to do. However, the more we grow up we are even more afraid to cry in front of others. There is an invisible social framework created that says you can't show your weakness to anyone. Therefore, Ms. Molly feels that this story is stuck in her mind which influence her to draw characters with big tears like Crybaby cry for us. Ms. Molly considers Crybaby to be a representative of people who don't dare cry or show their weakness to others because Ms. Molly used to be stuck in a society that people try to tell us to be strong and we to show that we are okay and can handle it. Ms. Molly stated that “Maybe we can show some weakness, give yourself time to be sensitive, to understand your own feelings and finally move past those stories.”

'Cry me a river', the first solo exhibition of Ms. Molly was hold on 6th - 29th May 2022, an exhibition of positive energy that makes you need to turn around and be kind to yourself again with the idea of creating a space for people to allow themselves to feel sad, disappointed, discouraged, or express it through their actions by crying and to slowly and calmly understand their own feelings. In order to be able to learn to live with that feeling and eventually overcome it and even if the cause of suffering is caused by others or is it a cause that arises from itself. All the sorrow that has happened. These are all important feelings that deserve to be heard and encouraged.

“Everybody Cries Sometimes” was an event with the concept of 'Come together and cry together' which can be interpreted in many different ways. Within the event there will be paintings and sculptures available to view in many sizes. and many characters that have different interpretations, dressing Crybaby in their own style and there are also souvenirs. There are many collectibles from the Crybaby series at the event to choose from and these are four main sections in this exhibition

01 The Insomniac: This is the only work on display on the first floor and the largest work in the exhibition. This enormous Crybaby is crying on a large bed. Crybaby refers to many different types of crying. For The Insomniac, Molly conceptualized this crybaby as insomnia to reflect as people have to hold back their feelings throughout the long day. When it was time to spend the night with themselves. They just lay down and cry until morning thinking about things that make them feel bad.

02 The Broken One:This piece of Crybaby represents a broken human being. Ms. Molly explained that “On the day we plummeted to the point of utmost regret. Our identity is broken inside. The word broken is used because we have to try to put ourselves back together. I think many people go through emotions like this,” The Broken One is scattered throughout the second-floor exhibition space. The head is on one place, arm is on one place, and the legs are on one place. There aren't really any good pieces, so this crybaby will not be easy to put back together, Ms. Molly believes it wouldn't be too difficult. “Emotions are complicated. We try to communicate honestly and honestly, but also make it easy to see and easy to understand so people will know exactly what we're talking about.”

03 The Good One : This crybaby may look a little strange because this large bronze sculpture is Crybaby smoking a cigarette. Ms.Molly said “The Good One speaks for those who have been convicted. Smoking may seem like a sign of a bad person, but if we're really talking about it, bad people have hearts.Therefore, what we see is a façade. We never know what he went through. Don't judge him just there.“Crybaby isn't just a child, Cry baby is even more abstract than concrete.” Crybaby has no gender. It can be a girl, it can be a boy, it can be a dog, it can be a cat, it can be anyone and everything. It can be seen that they do not even use pronouns like normal humans. Crybaby usually a word to express childish appearance as when we were children, we friend sincerely and honestly.

04 The Angry : There are 3 The Angry sets: The Angry Brown which is the original skin color of the little one, The Angry Blond which is the yellow-haired little girl, and The Angry Bunny which is the little rabbit. All three of them stood and looked as if they were angry, to express that they are not angry, they are in pain. Ms. Molly explained that “Some people may act like they're very angry, mad, mad, but deep down they're hurt. they did not know how to express it and did not know how to ask for help, so they covered it up with anger.”
